What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Lateral Crawl will launch into Early Access as a complete, playable experience, but there are already plans to expand the world significantly beyond that initial release. Early Access will provide time to develop those ideas while listening to player feedback, and give early players an opportunity to help steer the direction of the game”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The current plan is for Lateral Crawl to remain in Early Access for approximately one year. This may change depending on development and player feedback.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version is planned to expand the road considerably beyond the Early Access release. Planned additions include a more developed endless-road experience, an additional completion condition, and larger pools of biomes, bosses, hats, points of interest and other encounters.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version is planned to launch as a fully playable traditional roguelike with the core road, combat, survival, equipment, skills and procedural world systems in place, alongside a substantial pool of biomes, events, enemies, bosses and points of interest. Development during Early Access will focus primarily on expanding the world, adding content and refining the existing experience.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The full release may be priced slightly higher than the Early Access version to reflect the additional content and development completed on the road to 1.0.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Player feedback will help inform balancing, usability improvements and the direction of new content during Early Access. Feedback and bug reports will be gathered through the Steam Community, with development updates shared as the game evolves.”

About This Game

Lateral Crawl is a turn-based, grid-based traditional roguelike stretched across an infinite road. You are a Cousin travelling rightward through a procedurally assembled world of changing biomes and roadside events. Your objective is to keep going and complete your search for the last nightclub.

KEEP MOVING

Your job is simple: keep travelling right.

Scavenge houses, shops, ruins and stranger places for weapons, food, clothing and anything else that might keep you alive.

SURVIVE

Combat is turn-based, grid-based and positional. Hit things with whatever is in your hands, shoot them, throw things at them, set traps, deploy turrets, push them into hazards or find some other stupid solution that happens to work.

Weapons wear out. Food may not agree with you. Hunger and thirst creep in. Disease, injury and other conditions can turn a perfectly respectable journey into a disaster. The body is another system you have to manage.

SHAPE YOUR RUN

There are no levels and no stat progression. Instead, you can gain odd skills and temporary advantages along the road. Pay attention, discover interactions and become dangerous in ways you probably didn't plan.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Lateral Crawl will launch in Early Access. The Early Access build will contain some AI-generated and developer-edited sound effects, which are planned to be replaced before the 1.0 release.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

Contains stylised pixel-art violence and gore, including blood, dismemberment, decapitation and creatures collapsing into viscera. Also contains profanity, crude bodily-function humour, alcohol use, fictional injectable substances and simulated gambling.
