About This Content

Worktree Mastery is a themed challenge pack for git gud that hands you the keys to the development environment at CloudNine DevOps, a microservices platform racing toward its v3.0 release. Four developers need four branches checked out at once, a security patch cannot wait for someone to finish stashing, and the junior dev just deleted a worktree directory by hand. You are the DevOps engineer who keeps all of it running in parallel.

This content pack features ten story-driven Git scenarios built around a fully simulated repository and command-line environment. Each challenge mirrors a real reason teams reach for worktrees, wrapped in a narrative that explains why the feature exists and not just which flags to type.

Across your time at CloudNine, you will:

  • Spin up a worktree so a developer can start on OAuth without anyone switching branches
  • Check out an existing hotfix branch in its own directory for isolated testing
  • Pull a verbose status report of every active worktree and where it lives
  • Lock a worktree with a reason so nobody prunes a teammate's work in progress
  • Unlock and move a worktree to match a new directory naming convention
  • Open a detached HEAD worktree at a single commit for code archaeology
  • Remove a finished worktree properly instead of leaving stale metadata behind
  • Prune dead references left by manual deletion, dry run first
  • Repair broken links after the main repository is moved out from under its worktrees

Like the base game, Worktree Mastery implements Git behavior as faithfully as possible: real worktree metadata, real lock reasons, real detached HEAD state, and real prune and repair semantics. Nothing here is an abstract puzzle standing in for the genuine commands.

The final challenge is a full sprint setup with no step-by-step instructions. Two feature worktrees, a locked release candidate, and a verification pass, all of it yours to plan and execute before the team shows up on Monday.

This DLC is ideal for players who already understand Git basics and are tired of stashing, switching, and rebuilding just to look at another branch.
