Darrell 3D is an autonomous first-person dungeon crawler where you play as the spectator: gear Darrell up, choose his patches and loadout, send him back down, rescue dogs, witness bizarre FMVs, DMs, and events, and watch him fight his way through the dungeon to break free from his prison.

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Darrell 3D is already playable from beginning to end, but there are a lot of systems, progression loops, balance decisions, and strange little corners of the game that will benefit from real players getting their hands on it. Early Access gives me room to tune progression, improve pacing, polish rough edges, and expand the parts of the game people actually respond to instead of guessing in a vacuum. I built this thing solo, without an audience. You’re it.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I currently expect Darrell 3D to remain in Early Access for roughly 6–12 months. That may change depending on player feedback, development priorities, and how much the game grows along the way. Could be less. TL;DR when it feels "right" according to the players.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version is planned to build on the complete core game already available in Early Access. Before leaving Early Access, I plan to add more enemy variety, expand boss encounters with more distinct mechanics, continue tuning progression and combat balance, and make additional quality-of-life and presentation improvements based on player feedback.

The core game structure, progression systems, zones, and primary gameplay loop are already in place.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version is fully playable and includes the core Darrell 3D experience: all five dungeon areas, combat and progression systems, gear, skills (patches), bosses, town systems, the kennel, bestiary, media player, events, and the game’s full progression loop. The game is still being balanced and polished, and some systems may change as development continues.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No. I intend to keep the price the same when Darrell 3D leaves Early Access. The price point is very intentional. I want the game to be affordable, approachable, and accessible, even if your computer is a toaster and your budget for a new game is limited.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I plan to use the Steam Community forums and player reviews as the main places to gather feedback, bug reports, balance concerns, and suggestions. I’ll be paying close attention to what players actually enjoy, what frustrates them, and where the game feels too slow, too confusing, or just plain broken. That feedback will help guide balancing, polish, quality-of-life improvements, and which parts of the game are worth expanding during Early Access. I’ve reached a point where I’m too close to the game to judge every part of it objectively. The community is going to be integral to making it better.”

About This Game

DARRELL IS TRAPPED

Somewhere under a dead BBS, Darrell is having a very bad time. You’re on the other side of the screen.

Watch his back. Get him out.

PUNCH SHIT DEAD

Darrell does the fighting. He punches, blocks, rages, gets hit, gets back up, and occasionally turns something into a problem that no longer exists.

You don’t control every swing. You build the guy throwing them.

GEAR HIM UP

Buy gear, install patches, and change his loadout. Build for damage, health, defense, rage, money, survival, or some deeply stupid combination of all of them.

You have limited slots. Make them count.

SEND HIM DOWN

Darrell handles the dungeon on his own. He walks, fights, and keeps going until something stops him.

Your job is everything before and after. Make the build, send him down, and see what happens.

WATCH HIM DIE

He will. A lot.

Bring him back stronger, change the build, and send him again. The dungeon keeps getting worse. Darrell keeps going anyway.

BUILD YOUR PACK

There are dogs down there.

Obviously you rescue them.

Build your pack and bring them along while Darrell continues doing whatever the hell this is.

TAKE A BREAK

Darrell doesn’t need you staring at him every second. Open the VCR, load your own videos, and watch something while he keeps fighting in the background.

He has his thing. You have yours.

WAIT, WHAT?

Expect FMVs, DMs, glitches, interruptions, strange events, bad advice, and things that probably should not be happening.

Some of it matters. Some of it doesn’t.

Good luck figuring out which is which.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO PLAY.

DARRELL DOES.
