Millennia be yours, Godmother; a century for the child you cradle.

No kinship idly claimed; year upon year, we bow before you.

We prostrate before the gods, for calamity ceasing, sickness fleeing.

Yet should calamity and sickness befall the divine themselves, to whom, then, are they left to pray?

Listen. The howling wind tears through the leaves — is that the trees, keening?

In red bridal silk we shroud the departed; from white paper we cut pristine garments.

The number 8 is a Möbius strip — it winds and wanders, only to arrive once more where it began.

So too the faith of Zangling Village. Forever bowing to new gods and forsaking the old, yet never once slipping free of that single word: desire.

Whatever one kneels before, none escapes the eight sufferings of a mortal life: to love and be parted, to yearn and never attain.

In this eighth chapter of the Paper Bride series, we return with a handful of old friends to Zangling Village, tracing one sorrowful tale after another, each drawn from what came before.

The ending may arrive as no surprise. Whether it sits within reason is harder still to say.
