What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Sound-Overlay already provides a functional Windows audio-control experience, but audio hardware, drivers, games, and user workflows vary considerably between systems. Early Access allows us to improve the application using feedback from people with a wider range of speakers, headsets, microphones, USB interfaces, Bluetooth devices, and multi-device setups.
Community feedback will help guide compatibility improvements, automation features, accessibility, visual refinement, and the overall workflow as Sound-Overlay progresses toward its full release.”

Approximately how long will this software be in Early Access?

“We currently expect Sound-Overlay to remain in Early Access for approximately 12 to 18 months. This estimate may change depending on hardware compatibility testing, community feedback, platform development, and the time required to deliver reliable updates.
We would rather keep Sound-Overlay in Early Access longer than move to a full release before its core audio-control and automation features meet the expected level of stability and usability.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version is planned to offer broader compatibility with audio devices and drivers, additional IF → THEN automation conditions and actions, more customization options, improved visuals, and further refinements to overlays, notifications, accessibility, and device-management workflows.
Longer-term goals include evaluating native macOS and Linux versions. Support for these platforms will depend on platform-specific audio API development, hardware testing, and our ability to provide the same reliable experience available on Windows.
These are development goals rather than guaranteed features. Plans may change as we evaluate technical feasibility and respond to community feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version is a functional Windows desktop application built around audio-device management and automation.
Users can view and manage output and input devices, switch outputs, configure device priorities, retain priorities for disconnected devices, use global hotkeys, and access device controls through desktop overlays. Sound-Overlay can also scan supported local game libraries, recognize manually added games and applications, and create IF → THEN automations that respond when selected games or applications run.
Automations can use multiple conditions, primary and alternate output devices, volume actions, restoration behavior, testing tools, and conflict warnings. Appearance, motion, transparency, notification, and accessibility settings are also available.
Because this is Early Access, some audio hardware or driver combinations may behave differently, and users may encounter bugs or workflows that still need refinement.”

Will this software be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price may increase as the application gains broader device compatibility, additional automation capabilities, platform support, and other substantial improvements.
Any pricing changes will be communicated in advance through the Steam store page and community announcements.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to use Steam Discussions, support messages, bug reports, feature requests, and user feedback to identify hardware compatibility issues and prioritize improvements.
Feedback will be especially valuable for testing different audio devices, Windows configurations, game-launch behavior, global hotkeys, overlays, automations, accessibility settings, and multi-monitor environments.
Development updates and release notes will be shared through Steam. We will review reports regularly, communicate known limitations, and update the Early Access description as the application and its development priorities evolve.”

About This Software

Sound-Overlay puts your Windows audio devices under one fast, organized command center—so you can spend less time digging through system settings and more time playing, working, or creating.

Switch between speakers, headphones, headsets, microphones, and other audio devices using global hotkeys or a polished in-game overlay. Arrange devices by priority, and Sound-Overlay can automatically return to a preferred device when it reconnects while keeping reliable alternatives ready.

Build powerful IF → THEN automations that react when selected games or applications begin running. For example, automatically switch to your gaming headset when a game launches, choose alternate devices if your first option is unavailable, adjust volume, and restore your previous audio setup when the automation ends.

Key features include:

  • Quickly switch Windows output devices

  • Organize connected and disconnected devices by priority

  • Automatically activate higher-priority devices when they reconnect

  • Configure system-wide keyboard shortcuts

  • Use an accessible device selector and desktop overlay

  • Scan supported local game libraries

  • Create automations for multiple games and applications

  • Configure primary and alternate audio devices

  • Detect potentially conflicting automations and hotkeys

  • Receive clear device connection, activation, and switching notifications

  • Customize appearance, motion, transparency, and overlay behavior

Sound-Overlay works locally with Windows audio and process information. It does not inject code into games, launch selected applications, or upload your game library and audio-device information.

Sound-Overlay is currently in Early Access. The core audio-switching and automation experience is available now, with continued improvements planned for device compatibility, accessibility, workflow refinement, and user feedback.
