Someone is knocking. Count carefully.

Garland Court, 1974. The rent on apartment 4B is impossibly cheap, and on your first night Rosa Hale from 4C, across the hall, slides the house rules under your door:

if someone knocks TWICE — only twice — do not answer. do not speak.

they are not asking to come in. they are asking you to come out.

Rosa Hale has been dead for six years.

Listen at the door

The knock comes exactly twice, perfectly even, every time. Look through the peephole, check the feet in the gap under the door, then decide whether to open it.

It doesn't stay outside

In the remake, the door isn't the end of it. The thing can try to get in, or come straight through, and when it does you get under the table and stay there. If its fingers reach under the door, move away from them fast, or that's the night over. It can come through under the door as well. There are around a dozen ways it can get you, and the peephole is only one of them.
