What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Early access allows us to validate the core pillars of Steam Colony—crafting, automation, base building, and wave defense—with real players while the game is still being shaped. Being a two-person team, we need community feedback to make smart iteration choices and improve balance, clarity, and fun without overbuilding features before we can prove they work well.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We estimate around 18 to 24 months in early access. This is an estimate, not a fixed commitment, and the timeline can change based on technical results, feedback volume, and QA outcomes. We will communicate any adjustments as early as possible.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version is planned to keep the same foundation and identity, but expand and deepen it: more crafting depth, more meaningful progression, more recipes and machines, smarter robots and logistics, stronger defenses and threats, and broader balancing/recommendation improvements. We also expect broader polishing of onboarding, UX, accessibility, performance, and audiovisual details based on player feedback and play data.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game already includes a deterministic procedural voxel world, mining/building with persistent changes, a central Core and protection system, specialized robots, resource chains involving water/heat/steam/electricity/Ether, four active research trees, two game modes (Survival and Free), and save/loading infrastructure with autosaves and migration support. The current build is playable and stable for focused testing, but still in active iteration: balancing, UI clarity, bugs, and progression pacing are still being refined.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. The early access price is expected to be lower. We may adjust the price when the game reaches full release (for example at 1.0), based on content scope and final positioning. All price changes will be communicated in advance. Buying during early access includes access to the full version.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to use Steam News, Discussions, and visible patch notes as our main channels. We will regularly collect bug reports, run playtests, and use feedback to prioritize what gets fixed or expanded next. The team will share what is changing and why—especially in areas like automation readability, progression pace, resource balance, wave difficulty, and UX—so players can follow the direction and understand decisions.”

About This Game

Steam Colony combines voxel building, industrial automation and nighttime defense. At the center of everything is your Steam Core: the heart of a colony that needs resources, working machines and a plan for whatever arrives after sunset. Build alone or share the work with friends in online co-op.

Build your colony, block by block

Explore a procedurally generated voxel world, find deposits and choose where your colony will take shape. Mine materials, raise structures and arrange workshops, storage and defenses around the Steam Core. Plan your layout to connect production, make room for robot routes and protect your base.

A daytime overview of the Colonia-easy colony, with the Steam Core, workshops, pipes and robots arranged by the player.

Put your robots to work

Give specialized robots jobs in mining, wood gathering, transport and defense. Mark work areas and create logistics routes to move resources where they are needed. Watch your robots at work in the world and adjust their routes as the colony grows.

Bring your machines to life with steam

Connect pumps, boilers, pipes and machines into an industrial network. Begin with water, heat and steam, then research technologies that bring high pressure, mechanical power, electricity and Ether into your colony. Expand production, unlock equipment and decide which improvements deserve your resources before the next night arrives.

Prepare by day. Defend by night.

Use daylight to gather supplies, strengthen your walls and position your defenders. At night, invading creatures threaten your infrastructure and the Steam Core itself. Keep your robots supplied, protect the network behind your defenses and join the fight when the colony needs you.

Play solo or divide the work with friends: while one player expands production, another can handle logistics or prepare the defenses. Every dawn is another chance to improve what you have built.

Find your perspective

Switch between first-person, third-person and top-down views to explore your colony and plan its next expansion. Customize your operator’s paint colors and make the character your own.
