Vincent Willem van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, in Zundert, Netherlands. Before turning to art at age 27, he worked as an art dealer and a lay preacher. His younger brother, the art dealer Theo van Gogh, provided him with financial and emotional support throughout his career. In the span of one decade, Vincent produced over 2,100 artworks, including approximately 860 oil paintings defined by Post-Impressionist techniques and thick brushstrokes. Following a history of severe mental illness, he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on July 29, 1890, in Auvers-sur-Oise, France. He sold only one painting during his lifetime.
