What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“As the sole developer on the project, Early Access gives me the opportunity to share the game with a wide audience to gather support and feedback as I'm creating the game. The format of the game will make it well suited to Early Access, as once the base mechanics are in place, the focus will be on releasing more and more opponents over time.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The original estimate was six months to a year from the Steam launch assuming that the game mechanics wouldn't change much after launch and that I'd just be adding in more opponents and then polishing graphics, sounds, and game menus. Instead the game took a much more realistic turn and most of that time was spent adding more depth to the game mechanics and collecting and responding to feedback on the changes. The game will continue in Early Access at least until the core set of opponents are implemented.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Thrill of the Fight is a simple game from a single developer with humble beginnings as a side-project to a day job, and has now become a full time focus of its own. The current planned scope for the game differs from the current version in the following ways:

  • Additional opponents to provide a satisfying variety of fighting styles and challenge level (likely around 10 opponents total not including the just-for-fun fighters)
  • Additional NPCs in and around the ring
  • General polish and quality of life improvements

Details are subject to change based on playtesting, budget and timeline, and player feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game currently has mostly finalized boxing mechanics including a realistic damage system and a scored round system. There are currently seven core opponents out of the ten that are planned.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Unless a large and currently unplanned feature is added to the game, there are currently no plans for the price to increase in the future.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community feedback will be taken into consideration every step of the way. While I plan to keep a strong vision for how the game will shape up, I want to be very responsive to whether or not players are enjoying themselves and feeling satisfied with the game they're playing. Please don't be shy to opt into the beta branch of the game through Steam and share your thoughts about the future direction of the game.”

Beta Update - December 11

Note: For those looking to try out the beta, you can do so by right clicking the game in Steam, going to "Properties", clicking the "Betas" tab, and choosing the "beta" option from the dropdown.

Hello, everyone!

I've got another beta update going out now with another new boxer: Mateo Vega, A.K.A. "Matty", the contender from the Dominican Republic. Mateo is a bit of a different fight than the rest of the cast, with a much larger focus on evasion and counter-punching. His model/rigging needs some small touch-ups, and I haven't completely finalized his stats or behavior yet, but I wanted to get some early feedback from all of you. I want him to be meaningfully evasive, but I don't want him to be frustrating. He's supposed to be difficult to
fight, but I don't want him to be literally impossible to beat. Please give him a try and let me know how much you like the fight.

12/14: Matty and the rest of the boxers that can dodge are now using a brand new slipping system. It likely needs some tweaking, but let me know how it's working for you.

I'm also adding a new third-person camera system that works a bit more like a TV camera would. The camera will zoom in or out to keep the action in frame and will change angles if it can't get a good view.

Please let me know your thoughts in the feedback thread here or by emailing me at fyiandev@gmail.com.

If you run into a game breaking issue, please report it to me and then switch over to the rollback branch to go to the previous beta update.

Thanks!

Update Notes:
  • Added new opponent: Mateo Vega, "Matty"
  • Added new dynamic third person camera system
  • Melky now plays grunt sounds like he should when hit hard.
  • Reduced the size of the area you need to stand in to start the match with the mouthpiece.

12/12 Hotfix: Fixed issue where Matty's special evasion behavior had been applied to all boxers. Removed ducking from all boxers and limited leaning back. Leaning to the side improved.

Beta Update - November 28

Note: For those looking to try out the beta, you can do so by right clicking the game in Steam, going to "Properties", clicking the "Betas" tab, and choosing the "beta" option from the dropdown.

Hello, everyone!

New beta update! New character!

Meet Alexei Petrov, A.K.A. "Melky", the young-blood from St. Petersburg who has come overseas to train at Hazegood's Gym. As your first serious opponent, Melky will be a bit easier than the rest of the roster, and hopefully provide a gentler ramp-in than Joe. Note: Unlocking Ugly Joe requires you to beat Melky first, so Joe will disappear for you until you have defeated Melky once.

A few other small items have been added as well, including an option to adjust opponent aggression, the ability to quit a match early by clinching until the ref calls the match, and some stat adjustments.

Take a look at the change list below and please let me know your thoughts in the feedback thread here or by emailing me at fyiandev@gmail.com.

If you run into a game breaking issue, please report it to me and then switch over to the rollback branch to go to the previous beta update.

Thanks!

Update Notes:
  • Added new opponent: Alexei Petrov, "Melky"
  • Clinching an opponent for an extended period of time will now cause the ref to call the match. This both provides a quick way to exit a match mid-round and avoids an exploit involving clinching indefinitely to time out a match in your favor.
  • Reduced backward walk speed of opponents
  • Added "aggression" slider to customization menu and difficulty presets. This will affect both how eager an opponent is to close the distance on you and how many punches they may throw per combo.
  • Modified stats of most opponents very slightly to improve difficulty curve
  • Added idle facial variation animation to all opponents
  • Boosted facial reactions of opponents
  • Corrected spelling of Philadelphia in Joe's bio

About This Game

Room scale: The game is currently room scale only with a minimum space requirement of 2m front-to-back. If playing with SteamVR, please make sure you have gone through setup in "room scale" mode.

Oculus Rift users: Native Oculus support is included. Please ensure your Guardian boundaries are configured properly. For best results, you'll need 2m of front-to-back space.

Windows MR users: The Thrill of the Fight is compatible with WMR headsets and controllers, but holding your controllers near your face to block causes tracking loss due to the way WMR controllers are tracked. Because of this, I have not marked support for Windows Mixed Reality on the store page. If you still wish to play, please make sure you have configured your headset properly for room scale and have 2m of space front-to-back.

The Thrill of the Fight is still under active development. Future improvements include more polish, new opponents, and more.

The Thrill of the Fight is a boxing game designed specifically for VR. Enter a virtual gym and battle unique challengers with their own boxing styles and techniques. Use timing and skill to land the knockout blow. Evade punches, land jabs, and block blows to become the king of the ring.

The Thrill of the Fight is best described as a "semi-sim" with some simplified or unrealistic mechanics for the sake of fun and straightforward game play or to accommodate the limits of current VR technology. Mechanics are realistic where possible but the game is not guaranteed to be a fully accurate recreation of real boxing.

System Requirements

    Minimum:
    • OS: Windows 7 SP1 or newer
    • Processor: Intel Core i5-3450 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 equivalent or greater
    • Memory: 8 GB RAM
    • Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX970 or AMD Radeon R9 290 equivalent or greater
    • DirectX: Version 11
