“We expect Backrooms: Overstay to be in Early Access for roughly one to two years. This is an estimate and may change as the game grows and we respond to community feedback.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to expand Backrooms: Overstay well beyond its Early Access starting point. Our goals include additional levels to explore, more enemies with distinct behaviors, deeper crafting and building, more items and ways to survive, a fuller audio and atmosphere pass, and more polish across the whole experience. We also plan to refine multiplayer, balance, and the core survival loop based on how players actually play. We want the community to help shape which of these directions we prioritize, so the final scope may evolve over time.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Backrooms: Overstay is early and rough. It offers a playable core loop: explore an endless, procedurally generated Level 0, scavenge and craft, build and reinforce a shelter, and survive against enemies solo or in online co-op for up to 8 players, while managing survival needs and sanity. Because it is early, expect bugs, placeholder content, and systems that are still being tuned and expanded.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to gradually raise the price as we ship significant new content and features during Early Access, with a possible final adjustment when we reach the full release. Buying during Early Access means getting the game at its lowest price, and you keep the full version at no extra cost.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community feedback is central to how we develop Backrooms: Overstay. We plan to gather feedback and reports through the Steam Community discussion boards and to share our plans through a public roadmap, using community polls to help us prioritize what to build and fix next. Player suggestions, bug reports, and discussion will directly influence how the game evolves through Early Access.”

About This Game

Backrooms: Overstay is a co-op survival horror game set in an endless, procedurally generated Backrooms. Explore, scavenge, and survive solo or with up to 8 players while you search for the way out.

  • Endless procedural levels. The yellow, humming Level 0 generates endlessly around you, with no edges and nothing repeating. Every run is seeded, so share a seed to play the same map with friends.
  • Stealth against four hunters. Each enemy hunts differently and has a weakness you learn: stay unlit, stay quiet, or stay out of sight. Weapons only stagger them, so running and hiding beat fighting.
  • Survival and sanity. Manage hunger, thirst, stamina, warmth, and health. Rising stress brings hallucinations and false sounds.
  • Craft and build. Gather materials, unlock blueprints, build and reinforce a shelter, set traps, and crawl into the vent network to break line of sight.
  • 8-player online co-op. Positional proximity voice chat the monsters can hear, plus solo play and optional PvP.
  • Your rules. Calm, Normal, or Cruel difficulty, optional permadeath, and a real goal: reach the exit and escape, or get kept forever.

Some of the assets that ship with Backrooms: Overstay were created with generative AI during early
development, primarily a portion of the sound effects and ambient audio, along with some early
placeholder art. All of this content is pre-generated and baked into the game. Nothing is generated
live while you play, and the game does not connect to any external AI service. We are actively
replacing this AI-made content with hand-authored assets across ongoing updates. All AI-assisted
content has been reviewed by us for appropriateness and to ensure it does not infringe third-party
rights.

The developers describe the content like this:

Backrooms: Overstay is an atmospheric co-op survival-horror game. Expect sustained tension,
dread, and occasional jump scares, plus a psychological-horror layer. As your character's
stress rises, the game produces unsettling hallucinations: distorted sounds, whispers, and a
warping, unreliable screen.

Violence is mild and defensive. You use a pistol and improvised explosives to fend off
fictional monstrous creatures. There is no blood, gore, or corpses. Defeated enemies simply
collapse and fade, and being defeated yourself is shown as an on-screen "downed / bleeding
out" prompt. Themes of fear, isolation, and death run throughout, and an optional permadeath
mode can end a run permanently.

Survival items include fictional first-aid supplies, a calming sedative pill, and a stimulant
energy drink, all used only as ordinary survival tools.

The game contains no sexual content or nudity, no sexual violence, no self-harm or suicide, no
drug or alcohol abuse, and no real-world hateful or extremist content. Online sessions use live
proximity voice chat, so you may hear unmoderated audio from other players.
