vim racer is a speed based training game that teaches real Vim motions by racing a block cursor through real source code, from h j k l all the way to search and bracket matching. There's no accuracy score, only speed, so the fastest path is always the correct one.

About This Game

Learn Vim the only way that actually sticks: race the clock, then race your friends.

vim racer turns Vim's modal navigation into a skill you can practice, measure, and beat. A real block cursor moves through real text, actual source from the Go standard library, CPython, Lua, and other open-source projects. Your job is simple: reach every target with the fastest keystrokes. There's no accuracy score to pad your ego. The fastest path is the correct path, full stop.

Seven motion groups take you from h j k l through word jumps, counts, line and file navigation, search, and bracket matching. Each one builds directly on the last, the same way real muscle memory builds at a real keyboard. Every lesson tracks your personal best, so you don't just learn the motions, you get faster at them run after run.

Once the motions stick, take them online. Up to six players race the same file at the same time, with every Vim motion unlocked, and you can watch your rivals' cursors move through the text live as you race. Nobody wins until everyone crosses the finish line, and the fastest time takes the round.

Key Features

  • Real-time multiplayer races for up to 6 players, with live ghost cursors showing exactly where everyone else is in the file

  • Invite Steam friends, share a lobby code (yank it with y, join with p), or open your lobby to the public browser and let anyone jump in

  • 7 lesson groups, all unlocked from the start, so you can go straight to the motions you need to drill

  • Real code as practice text instead of synthetic filler: Go, Python, C, C#, and YAML from real projects

  • Speed-only scoring with no accuracy metric and no partial credit, just your time and your personal best

  • 8 built-in color themes, including OneDark, Catppuccin, Gruvbox, Tokyo Night, and Dayfox

  • :export writes a ready-to-use Neovim init.lua from your in-game settings, so your practice setup carries straight into your real editor

  • Built for keyboard purists: mouse input isn't just discouraged, the game actively calls it out
