About This Game

Family game night just got hilariously weird.

The TV shows a prompt with a blank in it. Everyone picks their funniest answer from their phone. The cards get read out loud on the big screen, one at a time, and somebody gets crowned. Then it happens again, and it gets worse.

It's the party game with bite — gross, weird, embarrassing, absurd — with no swearing, no sex, and nothing you'd have to explain to a nine-year-old.

The jokes are about the people in the room

Everyone types their name when they join, and those names go straight into the deck — in the prompts and in the answers. Pronouns follow along automatically, so every card comes out reading like a real sentence no matter who it lands on.

"I have so many questions about why Bob brought ___ to the funeral."

That's the whole game in one line: it's funnier when it's about you. The only question is whether you can take it.

Grab a TV. Grab your phones.

1. Open it on the TV. One person runs Take a Joke on their Mac or PC — that's the screen everyone watches. A QR code appears.
   
2. Everyone else scans. Phones become the controllers. No app to install, no account to make — just type a name and you're in.
   
3. Answer the prompt. Pick the funniest card from your hand, or write your own.
   
4. Crown a winner. Answers are revealed one at a time on the big screen. The judge picks a favorite — or the whole room votes.

One purchase covers the table. Only the TV needs the game. Everybody else just needs the phone already in their pocket.

Four ways to play

Mix and match how you answer with how you win:

• Classic Cards — everyone gets a hand of pre-written answers. Fast, easy, no typing. Best for first-timers and younger players.
  
• Write Your Own — type your own answers and go completely off-script.
  
• Judge Decides — one player picks the winner each round, and the role rotates so everyone gets a turn.
  
• Player Vote — the whole room votes, with a rotating tiebreaker so it stays fair.

Turn on Players Only mode and every single prompt is about somebody at the table.

You set the line

Switch off whole categories before you deal a single card — gross-out humor, bathroom jokes, and more. Game night with grandparents and a six-year-old is a different night than game night with your college roommates, and the deck adjusts to the room.

And in Write Your Own mode, the game filters what players type — so the kid testing the boundaries doesn't get to put it on the TV in front of Grandma.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Take a Joke uses generative AI in a few clearly defined places.

Created during development and shipped as fixed files:

• Artwork — the game's logo, icon, and character avatars were created using AI image-generation tools, then selected, edited, and assembled by hand.

• Narrator voice — the spoken introduction is a synthesized voice performance created with ElevenLabs, reading a script we wrote.

• Cards — the great majority of the prompt and answer deck was written by hand. A small number of cards were drafted with AI assistance. Every card in the game was read and approved by a person before it shipped.

Generated during play (optional features):

• The narrator occasionally reacts to what is happening in a round. The lines come from a fixed, human-written library; a player's name is inserted and the line is voiced with ElevenLabs.

• The optional end-of-game awards ceremony writes a short, custom awards show about the game you just played — the award titles and descriptions are AI-written from that game's results, then voiced.

When those optional features are on, the game sends player nicknames and submitted answers to the services that generate them. With them off, nothing is generated while you play.
