Сообщение от разработчиков

Почему ранний доступ?

«Locomotive Works is a train-building and freight game where players design steam locomotives, use them on real railway jobs, and see whether their designs can handle the work.

Early Access is the right fit because player feedback can directly improve the balance of the locomotive designer, the driving feel, the freight jobs, the economy, wagon handling, yard work, and the way the game explains locomotive performance.

The core systems are planned to be playable in Early Access, but still flexible enough to improve. I want player feedback on what feels satisfying, confusing, too easy, too difficult, or missing, so the game can grow in the right direction.»

Сколько примерно эта игра будет в раннем доступе?

«The current plan is for Locomotive Works to remain in Early Access for one to two years.

That may change depending on player feedback, the amount of content added, and how much refinement the core systems need. However, I believe that one to two years should be enough time to incorporate player feedback and develop the game into a solid, enjoyable steam locomotive design and freight game.

The initial Early Access release is planned to include the core locomotive designer, driving systems, freight jobs and main gameplay loop.»

Чем планируемая полная версия будет отличаться от версии в раннем доступе?

«The full version is planned to expand the amount of playable content, locomotive parts, freight jobs, customer contracts, routes, depots, polish and balancing.

During Early Access I plan to improve and expand the locomotive designer, add more components and locomotive types, refine the freight economy, add more deliveries and design challenges, improve the railway world, and continue balancing how locomotive design affects hauling ability, speed, steep climbs, cost and running performance.

I also plan to improve the railway work around the locomotives, including wagon handling, yard work, assembling trains, depot progression, and the balance between prepared jobs and more hands-on railway operations.

The aim for the full version is a more polished train-building and freight game, with a broader set of design options, jobs and routes, refined presentation, and more detailed systems based on player feedback.»

Каково текущее состояние версии в раннем доступе?

«The initial Early Access version is planned to focus on the core gameplay loop: designing steam locomotives from components, using them to haul freight, earning money from jobs, and proving whether each build can handle practical railway challenges.

Players should expect a playable but still-developing game. The Early Access version is planned to include a working locomotive designer, steam-era freight driving, a working freight railroad with yards, industries and branch lines, a first set of delivery jobs and design challenges, and locomotive performance systems where design choices affect practical results.

Some jobs will let players start with a train already assembled, while others will involve collecting, arranging and moving wagons themselves.

Some areas will still be in development during Early Access, including content variety, economy balance, environment polish, user interface polish, audio, tutorials, job variety and the range of locomotive parts.»

Изменится ли цена игры после выхода из раннего доступа?

«There are no plans to increase the price after Early Access. The Early Access price is intended to reflect the planned scope of the game.»

Как вы планируете вовлекать сообщество в разработку игры?

«Community feedback will be especially important for the locomotive designer, driving feel, freight jobs, wagon handling, economy balance, tutorials and overall usability.

I plan to use Steam forums, Steam announcements and player feedback to understand which locomotive parts are most useful, which jobs are enjoyable or frustrating, how well the game explains performance, and where the simulation should be deeper or more approachable.

Because Locomotive Works is built around designing locomotives and proving them in practical railway work, player feedback on the whole loop will help shape development during Early Access: building locomotives, arranging trains, making deliveries, expanding along the railroad, and understanding why a design succeeds or struggles.»

Об этой игре

Design steam locomotives, haul freight on a working railroad, and find out if they can handle the job.

Build locomotives from components like boilers, cabs, and wheel arrangements. How you design your locomotives affects their speed, range, cost, pulling power, and how many wagons they can haul.

Earn money by delivering cargo and designing locomotives for customers.

Different jobs need different kinds of locomotive, and you can design them all: small locomotives for moving wagons around yards, powerful freight engines that can haul many wagons over long distances, or general workhorses that can handle the steepest mountain lines.

Run a Working Freight Railroad

Your railroad stretches from a busy port by the sea to logging sites and mines in the mountains, with factories in between. You need to keep them all supplied, while coal, timber and manufactured goods need to reach the port for export.

Keep the railroad running by managing pickups and deliveries, and by collecting and storing empty wagons.

Build and Arrange Your Trains

You can build and arrange trains yourself, moving wagons between tracks and connecting them in the order you need.

Or start with a train already assembled and get straight to driving and making deliveries.

Choose the Right Engine for the Route

The lowland areas can support fast trains, but the mountains require specialised locomotives.

Decide whether you want to build more powerful engines, or split the load before you reach the steepest mountain climbs. Sometimes the best answer is not a bigger locomotive, but fewer wagons, a second trip, or a different engine for that part of the railroad.

Build small locomotives for yard work, fast engines for lighter cargo, heavy freight locomotives for the mountains, or dependable all-purpose engines that can work across the whole railroad.

Expand Along the Railroad

You can buy new depots along the railroad and branch lines, and use them as new bases, refuelling points, places to store locomotives, and yards for organising wagons.

Will you build large general locomotives that can cover long distances, or smaller specialised locomotives for each depot?

Build Locomotives That Do Real Work

Build completely new locomotives, or customise a ready-made design. Components include boilers, coal and water storage, chimneys, domes, fittings and different wheel arrangements.

Your choices affect how the engine performs, what it costs to build, how much it can haul, and which jobs it is suited for. For extra customisation, choose paint colours and add wear and grime to make each locomotive unique.

A small engine may be cheap and efficient, but can struggle with heavy loads. A larger freight locomotive may have the power for mountain climbs, but it costs more to build and run.

The aim is not just to make a locomotive that looks right - it must be able to do the work.

As well as making deliveries, you can earn money by building locomotives for customers. Some customers may want a powerful mountain engine. Others may ask for a cheap yard locomotive, a fast cargo engine, or a design that can travel long distances without stopping for supplies.

Prove Your Design

Once a locomotive leaves the workshop, the railroad becomes the test.

Train weight, steep climbs, braking distance, speed, coal, water and boiler pressure all affect whether you can complete a delivery. Trains feel heavy, momentum matters and design choices have consequences.

Drive your locomotive from outside or from inside the cab and see how your design performs.

Clear controls and readable information help new players get started. Heavier trains, longer journeys and more difficult routes provide greater challenges as you learn how your locomotives work.

Build the locomotives you need, make the deliveries your customers depend on, and find out whether your designs can do the job.
