What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“At long last, after more than three quarters of a decade in development, Prismata has made its way to Steam Early Access!

Prismata is the first title in a genuinely new genre of strategy game. Prismata's original design was extremely experimental, and it took years of refining, testing, and iterating to bring that design to a high level of balance and polish. Steam Early Access represents the final phase of this long period of feedback-driven development as we add a large amount of new content (missions and units) to the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Our current plans contain about 5 months worth of projects and features that we feel are necessary for the game to be considered 'complete'.

That said, we often receive many community suggestions for new features, changes, and quality-of-life improvements that were not in our original plans, and we try to implement them whenever we feel that their benefits exceed their costs. Accordingly, we expect to spend a few extra months on undecided additional features inspired by community suggestions and requests.

We expect that a full transition to the 'released' state will occur during the autumn of 2018.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“As Prismata's core feature set has already been fully implemented, we expect that Early Access updates will mostly consist of new content, small changes to the game software, and small balance tweaks if needed.

Episodes 2 through 5 of the single-player story campaign will be released one at a time, at roughly 1-month intervals, beginning with Episode 2 in April (Episode 1 is debuting alongside the initial Early Access launch). We'll also be adding several dozen new Prismata units, a number of new events, and many quality-of-life improvements to the game's interface, graphics, and sound.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“All of the features listed below in the 'About This Game' section are already fully implemented.

Prismata has undergone continuous alpha testing since late 2014, so we've had years to iron out all the major bugs and optimize usability within the core game. During that time, millions of games were played on the Prismata servers with a relatively low number of crashes and around 99.9% server uptime.

We hope to continue to provide this high level of service during our Early Access period.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Our long-term plan is to offer two versions of Prismata:

  • The Founder's Edition (available now), containing the full 5-episode single-player story campaign.

  • The Lite Edition (available late in Early Access), a free-to-play version of the game with substantially less single player content.

The Founder's Edition is the best value for players who want to experience the full game, and we will not be adjusting its price.

The Lite Edition will launch when we feel that the game and servers are 100% ready. We're very committed to making Prismata accessible to as many people as possible while avoiding the exploitative pay-to-win monetization employed by a lot of CCGs and related products. Prismata will never be a game where you can pay for an advantage in competitive multiplayer.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Most of the changes we made to Prismata during our alpha period came as the result of player feedback, and we expect that the trend will continue during Early Access.

There are many ways you can reach us, including our Discord server, Steam Forums, and subreddit. Lunarch Studios founder Elyot Grant hosts weekly streams on Twitch with open Q&A and suggestion periods.

Additionally, you can report bugs, request features, and make balance suggestions right from inside the Prismata software itself! Each and every piece of in-game feedback you submit goes directly to our inboxes and we read them all!

We're extremely grateful to all of our alpha and Early Access players for their valuable feedback!”

Balance Patch

Hi everyone!

In our ongoing quest to have the best version of each and every unit in the game, we've just pushed a set of changes to six Prismata units. These aren't just nerfs; actually, we focused more on buffs this time to try and give a few of the underrepresented Prismata units more of a chance to shine. A full explanation for the reasons behind these changes (alongside some stories about other things we've tried) can be found on the blog.
  • Odin - Health reduced from 4 to 3.
  • Mobile Animus - Click ability cost reduced from 3 to 2.
  • Wild Drone - Completely redesigned. Now has 2HP, 10 supply, 2 buildtime, costs 2E, and produces 1 gold per turn. Still Frontline.
  • Sentinel - Cost reduced from 7GR to 6GR. Health reduced from 4 to 3.
  • Militia - Cost changed from 6B to 3B + sacrifice a Drone.
  • Blood Phage - Cost decreased from 8RE to 6RE. Buildtime increased from 1 to 2.
A number of other small changes have gone in to support this patch:
  • Some AI opening book lines have been updated to handle the new Wild Drone, Militia, and Blood Phage.
  • The Gaussite Shenanigans and Xaetronics puzzles have had an Engineer added to the player's starting units to compensate for reduced Sentinel health.
  • The economy on the player's side of Don't Crack The Egg has been redesigned so that a solution involving the new Militia is possible.
  • Lucina's Rage and Stifling Constraints have been left alone. Both are still beatable with the new Blood Phage.
A few other changes:
  • The Squarewave mission has been radically changed to feature an enemy that builds Steelsplitters. The Expert Challenge version is also updated, and a few very minor changes have been made to the campaign dialogue to reflect what's happening in battle.
  • All the tutorial infographics have been updated, and new ones have been added for hotkeys and absorbing. The infographics are now visible from within the main menu under the Campaign tab.
  • The expert version of the Vorexus mission has been streamlined and a tip has been added to clarify how the AI behaves.
  • Fixed some rendering bugs involving the error text in game.
  • Fixed a bug where the server uptime stat would add extra increments to the logins count when users were nodeswitched to load-balance the servers. Going forward, the logins stat should now be correct (the games stat was always correct.)
  • Fixed a bug that would cause the unit art to fail to load for some events.
  • Fixed a bug where the counting dots would sometimes be mispositioned on some unit piles.
As usual, please let us know if you have any feedback or spot any problems! We plan on making further unit changes in the future, so please feel free to share your thoughts on what further tweaks might create better games!

Reviews

“Prismata is incredible. It’s like a war between RTS build orders, in card form. Genius.”
Jerry "Tycho Brahe" Holkins, founder of Penny Arcade

“A unique and brilliant blend of the strategy found in deck building card games and real time strategy games.”
Indiegames

“It’s impressively fair. Lunarch Studios have stuck to their guns on not selling advantages. I recommend strategy fans give it a try, partly as it defies easy description and mostly because it’s very clever.”
Rock Paper Shotgun

The Story

Hundreds of years in the future, humans have engineered a prosperous new civilization on the distant planet Beacon, where the sun never sets. Meanwhile, the planet's frigid dark side has been colonized by an enigmatic faction of intelligent machines that threaten humanity with conflict.

In these new cybernetic times, human soldiers are obsolete. Instead, warfare is conducted swiftly with massive armies of robots. The Swarmwielders—human commanders of these mechanical forces—are the defenders of society, training relentlessly for the day when the machines strike again. However, when their own robots start to mysteriously malfunction, the humans find themselves endangered by something much closer than the machines lurking beyond the fringe.

In Prismata, you’ll collect resources, create workers and technologies, assemble an all-conquering army, and trade blows with your opponent until one of you is obliterated. Prismata blends elegant turn-based mechanics with the tactical decision-making elements that are at the heart of real-time strategy games.

Featuring simple and intuitive economic and combat systems, Prismata is incredibly easy to learn. However, no two Prismata matches are ever the same. Every game, players get a new pool of extra buildable units that must be used to their fullest potential. There are always new builds to plan and discover, and new threats to respond to. Each battle is fresh and unique.

Containing no pre-built decks, random advantages, or luck-of-the-draw moments, Prismata’s cat-and-mouse duels celebrate quick-fire tactics, deep thinking, and decisive strategy. Will you execute a perfectly-timed attack, or will you build up a monstrous economy and overpower your opponent with a massive army?
