About This Game

You are a humble lighthouse keeper, working alone on a remote island. Being isolated for months on end really gnaws at your sanity. All those uncanny shadow figures and ghastly noises must be figments of your mind, right? Follow the signs on your path, find meaning in the madness and Save Our Souls.

Swarm of the Sea is a dark fantasy detective game about a lighthouse keeper that unravels a mystery through paranoid episodes, with puzzle elements. The game takes about 45min to complete, depending on your puzzle-solving skills.

The game was originally conceived as a submission for the ZenoJam 2022.

Narrative

You play as a lighthouse keeper in 19th century. Your job requires you to maintain the lighthouse for months on end in social isolation, occasionally interrupted by supply visits from the ferryman. Soon your mind starts to turn against itself. Among the ordinary, the sea, the skies, the leaking lighthouse walls, you start seeing unusual things. Moving figures in the shadows, distorted images of yourself and written words, twisted to read the darkest of thoughts. You continue your duties, but those delusions keep haunting your mind. You start questioning reality and whether those visions bear any meaning.

One day you encounter some strange objects that grab your attention. Their symbolism provides explanations that your mind can hold onto. Slowly you get rid of the intrusive thoughts and the order in your mind restores. With a certain compose you tend to your duties. But subconsciously you know they is more behind the visions. They try to convey a message, a message from the spectral world.

The voices of previous lighthouse keepers and unfortunate passengers echo through your head. Their bodies long submitted to the element, but their souls seem chained to the island. Finally another soul with whom they can share the burden of their story, to become freed from the eternal waves. Can you maintain the boundary between reality and the loaded history of the island? Or do you give in to the madness?

Unique visual style

The game’s design evokes a cosy horror vibe. The game features hand-drawn 2D animation combined with detailed 3D backgrounds, immersing players in a spooky, somewhat melancholic and occasionally terrifying atmosphere. The backgrounds and UI elements create a stop-motion experience that reinforces the claustrophobic, doll’s-house feel of the lighthouse, yet leaves a cosy impression.
