Every child in Java knows the warning. Stay out after sunset and Wewe Gombel will take you, and hide you where no one will ever find you.

Your best friend Dimas never came home.

As Bima, you follow the trail into the forest where the villagers refuse to go, past a dead village and an old man who begs you to turn back. Somewhere in the dark, Dimas is waiting. So is she.

Your light is your lifeline, and her signal

Your torch is the only thing holding back the dark. But keep it burning too long, and Wewe Gombel will notice. Ration your oil, choose when to be seen, and learn when to go dark.

• A torch that protects and betrays you: light keeps the dark at bay, but it draws her closer.
  
• Know when to run: when the singing begins, she is already near. Lower your light, keep moving, and don't let her reach you.
  
• A mind under pressure: the forest wears down your sanity. Every scare and every shadow costs you.

A forest full of rules

Wewe Gombel is not the only thing in these woods. The spirits of Javanese folklore have their own rules, and breaking them has a price.

• When you hear a woman singing behind you, do not turn around.
  
• Some spirits block the path until they are given the right offering.
  
• A mischievous Tuyul will steal what you need, unless you bring something it likes.
