What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are releasing Play and Learn: English in Early Access to develop it openly with community feedback. Language learning is deeply personal — an exercise that works for one player can feel dull to another. Early Access lets us see which courses, rooms and game modes real players actually use, and shape new content around that.

The core of the game is already built and working: offline speech recognition with your microphone, four complete courses from A1 to B2, role-play rooms and a fully voiced world. Since launch in June 2026 we have shipped 13 updates in three and a half months, driven by player reviews and reports, and we want to keep building the game that way.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan to stay in Early Access for approximately 8-12 months.
This timeline may shift depending on the desired content scope
and the direction the community takes. Rather than rushing
out an incomplete game, we aim to ship a polished, refined
full version shaped by player feedback.
”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“For the full version we plan to:

• Deepen the four existing courses (A1 to B2) with more lessons, practice and refinement based on how players progress
• Add new role-play rooms and arcade games on the topics players ask for most
• Improve speech recognition and microphone handling further
• Polish translations in all supported languages
• Polish visuals, interface and overall balance

Updates will keep arriving every one to two weeks. This is our current roadmap; priorities may shift based on player feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current Early Access version is fully playable and already offers:

• Microphone-based speech recognition that runs fully offline (Vosk)
• Four complete courses — A1, A2, B1 and B2: 163 chapters and 489 lessons with optional chapter tests
• Sentence meanings in 32 languages, interface in 33
• 35,000+ pre-recorded voice lines with four natural voices
• More than 20 role-play rooms, grammar pattern rooms, practice conversations and Free Talk
• A school with vocabulary classes and quiz battles
• Game Saloon with 16 arcade machines and a level lever from A1 to B2
• Podcast Maker for hands-free listening practice
• Word books (A2, B1, B2 and 5000 words) with meanings and audio
• Escape Rooms, Idiom Caves with 300 idioms, Phone Tower and Restaurant Street
• Card system — words you know appear green wherever they turn up
• Crafting, cooking, gathering and a character shop
• 20 Steam achievements for crafting
• Automatic saving; old saves keep working after updates

Still being expanded or improved:

• More content for some rooms and levels
• Translation polish in some languages
• Visual and UI polish”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to gradually increase the price alongside new content
and features added during Early Access. Players who join during
Early Access will get the most favorable price and receive all
updates for free. A modest price increase is planned for the
full release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community feedback is the central engine driving this game's
development. We plan to maintain active communication with
players through the following channels:

• Regular update notes and feedback discussions on the Steam
Community Hub
• A Discord server (link on the store page) — for real-time
communication, player requests and suggestions, beta-test
call-outs
• An update every one to two weeks, each announced on Steam and
on Discord
• Player-driven content selection — topics most requested on
Discord and the forums get prioritized
• Structured feedback forms for bug reports and feature requests

Our goal is for players to feel they truly took part in this
game's growth.”

About This Game

YOU GET HOME BY SPEAKING

A ship carried you north for days, left you on the shore of a world of ice, and sailed away. Home is far to the south. Here money will not warm you and fire is not enough — your only heat is words. Speak and you grow warmer and closer to home. Stay silent and the cold takes you.

FIRST WE GET YOU SPEAKING, THEN WE MAKE YOU BETTER

You do not need a hundred thousand words. About 850 everyday words cover almost everything you say in a day. Play and Learn: English has you saying them out loud on the first evening, and builds from there.

FOUR COMPLETE COURSES: A1, A2, B1 AND B2

Four full courses run through the world, each on its own island course map. You walk from chalkboard to chalkboard: every board teaches eleven sentences, shows what they mean in your language, says them aloud, then asks you to use them. Each chapter ends at a rest island with a cooking fire, where an optional test mixes everything you just learned — meaning, listening, spelling, gap-filling, and "what would you say here?".

A1 has 37 chapters; A2, B1 and B2 have 42 each: 163 chapters, 489 lessons and 163 checkpoints, from introducing yourself to sitting a job interview, renting a flat, taking something back to a shop and missing a connecting flight — and on to upper-intermediate English.

YOUR MICROPHONE IS THE CONTROLLER

Not the keyboard — your voice. Speech recognition runs on your own machine and listens to what you actually say. Words you get right turn green, and before long you will be playing just to watch the screen go green.

EVERY SENTENCE IN YOUR OWN LANGUAGE

You are never left guessing. Under every sentence you are asked to say, the meaning appears in your language — about 10,000 sentences translated into 32 languages. Words, example sentences and lesson notes are translated too, so a complete beginner can start without needing English to read the instructions.

ROLE-PLAY ROOMS — TALKING IS THE GAMEPLAY

Step into a real scene and the room gives you tasks. Order at the cafe, buy fruit at the market, describe your symptoms at the doctor's, open an account at the bank, get through customs, sit a job interview, buy a phone, book a holiday, view a flat. Say each task in English and it turns green in your journal; finish the room and take your reward at the door.

More than 20 role-play rooms at A1 and A2 level, plus the Phone Tower and Restaurant Street, with new rooms added over time.

GRAMMAR PATTERN ROOMS

"I want to...", "I need to...", "I am going to...", "There is...", "Let's..." — step into a room, hear the pattern, then say your own version out loud. You build real sentences, not isolated words.

SCHOOL, CLASSES AND QUIZ BATTLES

The school opens onto nine vocabulary classes. Each teaches a themed set of words and then puts you in a quiz battle against the teacher: a right answer earns gold, a wrong one costs health. A joker reveals the English word when you are stuck.

ESCAPE ROOMS

A chain of locked rooms that only language opens. Find the code, hunt down the missing objects, answer the riddles, say the sentence out loud, pick out the line you just heard, win the quiz battle. Every door asks for a different skill.

PRACTICE CONVERSATIONS

Scripted scenes — customs, hotel, pharmacy, bar, restaurant, directions, greetings, an interview — where you play one side of the conversation and the game plays the other.

FREE TALK — JUST SPEAK

No quiz, no right answer. Say anything in English and the game writes down what it understood, line by line on your notepad. The most honest mirror of your speaking, and it never leaves your computer.

THE CARD SYSTEM

Walk up to any object and its word, icon, meaning, example sentence and pronunciation appear. Say you know it and it goes into your notebook. From then on you see that word in green wherever it turns up, so your progress is visible and countable.

GAME SALOON — AN ARCADE OF WORD GAMES

Drop a gold coin into one of 16 arcade machines and play a quick round: Word Guess, Sentence Order, Numbers, Missing Letter, Listen & Pick, Listen & Type and more. Pull the lever to choose your level — A1, A2, B1 or B2.

PODCAST MAKER

A radio that reads sentences to you while you step away from the screen. Choose a level from A1 to B2 and a topic, set the speed, repeats and pauses, and just listen — every sentence comes with its meaning in your language.

WORD BOOKS

Find the A2, B1, B2 and 5000-word books in the game, each with meanings and audio.

EVERY LINE IS SPOKEN

More than 35,000 lines of audio are recorded into the game with natural voices — four speakers, young and old, male and female. Nothing is streamed and nothing is generated while you wait.
