What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“An ambitious project born from solo passion
I am developing this project entirely on my own. Ultimate Backrooms is a particularly ambitious horror game: my goal is to gather and sublimate all the best ideas from the Backrooms genre into one single, definitive experience. It is from this vision that the name "Ultimate" was born. The features already present in the description (procedural generation, co-op mode, proximity voice chat, survival, and sanity management) are just the foundations of everything planned for the final version.

What to expect today (Launch Version of Early Access)
Currently, the game offers a condensed but intense linear experience across 5 distinct levels (you progress from level 1 to level 2, then to level 3, etc.). This launch version is here to establish the title's unique visual and audio atmosphere, while demonstrating the raw potential and gameplay of the project through a deliberately shorter but extremely solid gaming experience.

The vision for the final version
Developing a game like this takes a lot of time, and that is where Early Access truly makes sense. Ultimately, the final game will feature at least 8 to 10 entirely unique levels. Most importantly, the progression will become completely non-linear: you will have the freedom to switch from one level to another, explore alternative paths, and attempt to escape without necessarily having to go through every single zone.

Building the game with you
Launching the game in Early Access is the best way to test the mechanics and sound design against community feedback. Your reviews, suggestions, and bug reports will be essential in helping me balance the difficulty, tweak the entity AI, and shape the rest of development. Thank you for being part of the journey and for supporting indie development!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“"Being completely transparent with you is my top priority. Developing such an ambitious project entirely on my own requires a tremendous amount of time and energy, especially since I also work a side job to support myself.

Therefore, the duration of this Early Access will directly depend on how the community receives the game. If the project is well-received and generates enthusiasm, it will allow me to dedicate 100% of my time to it: the game will then evolve very quickly and regularly toward its full release (the ultimate goal). If the reception is more modest, development will continue but will inevitably take much longer, as I will have to keep balancing it with my professional obligations. Your initial support will be the true driving force for the future of the game, but ultimately, reaching the final version will take between 8 and 14 months."”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“"The final version aims to offer a richer, more complete, and fully realized experience. The game will be expanded with new content, additional levels, and further gameplay mechanics, while the artificial intelligence will be refined.

Moving to the final version will be the perfect opportunity to optimize the entire project: the immersive sound design and original soundtrack will be finalized, and the game will benefit from technical improvements (Lumen, DLSS) to ensure a fluid and immersive analog horror experience."”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“What is the current state of the Early Access version?

The Early Access version offers a solid and original core experience that showcases exactly what the game is destined to become. The game is fully playable and establishes the fundamental building blocks: the analog horror atmosphere is set, the core gameplay mechanics are functional, and players can already explore immersive levels and face the first entities. It stands as a stable foundation that gives a true taste of the final vision.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price of the game will likely increase slightly upon the full release. Early Access offers a chance to support the development at a preferential rate. The final price increase will remain moderate and will reflect the addition of new levels, graphical improvements, and the finalized soundtrack.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I plan to actively involve the community by placing player feedback at the heart of the development process. I will closely monitor Steam discussions and reviews to fix bugs and tweak gameplay mechanics.

Depending on community engagement and investment, I also plan to open other communication channels, such as a dedicated subreddit or other platforms, to share behind-the-scenes updates and gather your suggestions to help shape the future of the game.”

About This Game

You should never have left reality.

A second of inattention, a misstep, and you are thrust into the Backrooms. This endless labyrinth of yellowish corridors, damp carpets, and the incessant hum of fluorescent lights is now your prison. But you are not alone.

To have any hope of seeing the real world again, you will need to explore shifting environments, manage your vital resources, and escape the horrors lurking in the shadows. Will you survive the anxiety, or will you become just another statistic in this infinite void?

Key Features

  • Ever-Changing Labyrinth: Do not rely on your memory. Thanks to procedural level generation, every escape attempt is unique. The corridors rearrange themselves, shattering your sense of direction at every moment.

  • Pure Survival and Sanity: Finding the exit will not be enough. You must actively manage your hunger, thirst, and above all, your sanity. Isolation and darkness will play with your nerves; lose your mind, and you lose your life.

  • Cooperate... or Get Lost Alone: Face the nightmare together in multiplayer mode. Stay grouped or split up: the game allows players to switch levels individually.

  • Proximity Voice Chat: Communicate with your teammates in real-time, but stay quiet. In the Backrooms, sound travels, and threats are listening. If you wander too far from your group, no one will hear you scream.

  • Limited Inventory and Crucial Choices: You start the adventure with only 4 inventory slots. Every item (water, food, tools) matters. Take risks to search every corner and hope to find a backpack to increase your chances of survival.

  • Fight or Flight: Facing the abominations that inhabit these places, fleeing is often the best option. However, you have the ability to attack entities. But beware: encounters are difficult, punitive, and highly risky.

Highlights

  • Unseen Threats: Prepare to face unique and exclusive entities. Learn their behaviors if you hope to escape them.

  • Total Audio Immersion: Dive into an oppressive psychological horror atmosphere thanks to an original soundtrack and sound design entirely crafted by hand (with absolutely no AI). Every creak and every echo is designed to make you doubt your own sanity.

System Requirements

    Minimum:
    • OS: Windows 10 / Windows 11
    • Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X 8-Core Processor
    • Graphics: NVDIA Geforce RTX 4060 TI
    • DirectX: Version 11
    • Storage: 20 GB available space
