What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“One of my design goals with Wizard School Dropout was creating a central playable core of the game and then expanding outwards from that. This is a long-term project that has a great deal of content planned, so Early Access helps get the game to player's hands more quickly, and helps me to plan how the game should develop based on how players like certain parts of it.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“It may be some time, as this is a long-term project. Most likely at least a year. Currently, there's been a major or semi-major release every month or two, so the game is still very much in active development.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“There is much more content planned for the game, with many more locations to visit and factions to befriend or antagonize, and more schools of magic. While most major systems are already in the game, there are a few planned features such as tower raids that aren't in yet, and some systems need to be broadened or deepened. Of course, the final version will also have full sound and music, as the current version just has some sound.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is fully playable and winnable. It currently features six magic elemental schools: the classical elements, necromancy, and Celestial, with each having several spells at various power levels. It features six location types for heists (several of those with sub-types per magic school), and over a dozen factions to trade or otherwise interact with. The tower management and resident recruitment system is in place. In addition it is being actively expanded with new locations, factions, and spell schools. The current cadence has been a major or semi-major update every month or two.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will remain the same during Early Access, but will increase at the time of full release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Players have already been involved with the development of Wizard School Dropout, and the hope is for that to continue. Feedback has been invaluable for shaping some of the game's systems, such as the disguise system, and on prioritizing what areas of the game players find most interesting or fun.”

About This Game

"It's your fault for going into debt for a useless degree like Necromancy. You should have gone to business school."

You left wizard school in disgrace. Cast out of magical society, you have only one option to pay off your exorbitant student loans: crime.

Using the unlicensed but probably mostly safe portal generator you found in a mysteriously abandoned tower,  go on heists where you infiltrate and steal from the rich and powerful.

After each heist, you can upgrade and learn spells, brew potions, trade secrets with cats, start a cult, improve your tower, become irrevocably corrupted by Forbidden Knowledge, craft magic items, and do other wizardly things. Just don't take too long before heading out to steal more, because interest is always accruing on your debt and if you don't pay up your creditors will be happy to take your soul instead.

Wizard School Dropout is a magic-focused, turn-based RPG and wizard simulator featuring lots of environmental interaction and spell combinations for a wide variety of playstyles. Do you want to go in loud, blowing holes in the walls with fireballs and incinerating everyone who stands in your way, teleport into and out of safety, or just waltz in and use mind powers to make the guards forget you were even there?

Features:

  • Magic-focused gameplay with a wide variety of spells that can be upgraded and customized.

  • Large amount of environmental interactions and effects. Light furniture on fire, freeze water to walk across it, spill all sorts of dangerous chemicals on the floor.

  • Short heists and "dungeons" within a longer-term game: "coffeebreak" style gameplay mixed with a longer campaign.

  • Varied playstyles. Blast everyone who stands in your way, disguise yourself, or sneak through in magical clouds. Terrify guards away or freeze them solid, Turn your enemies against each other or summon powerful creatures to do your bidding for you.

  • Infinite procedurally generated heist locations, but with varied and semi-handcrafted level design. Buildings, rooms, and areas have appropriate decor, loot, inhabitants, and interactions.

  • Customize and upgrade your wizard tower and recruit people and monsters to follow you on missions or perform jobs in the tower, or capture prisoners in your dungeon to ransom.

  • Adjustable difficulty. Permadeath, limited lives, or no permadeath. Increase or decrease required debt payments and interest for a more frantic or more relaxed pace.

Other Things You Can Do

  • Study magic books, artifacts, or materials in order to improve your spells and gain new abilities.

  • Become corrupted and mutated by forbidden knowledge and curses, or addicted to vampire blood.

  • Increase your magic power through insights gained from dreams.

  • Smoke hookah with and befriend chill wizards.

  • Trade secrets with cats.

  • Manufacture and sell magical drugs to decadent nobles, or harvest blood from monsters or other wizards to sell to vampires.

  • Start a cult.

  • Build an army of automatons and golems.
