What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“VR locomotion is a complex field where comfort and precision depend on many factors: PC configuration, headset type, and specific games. Early Access allows us to gather feedback from a wide range of users with different hardware to refine our filtering algorithms and expand the list of compatible games before the final release.”

Approximately how long will this software be in Early Access?

“We plan to stay in Early Access for approximately 6-12 months. This timeframe should be sufficient to implement all planned output modes and test them across the most popular VR titles.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“More advanced latency compensation and smoothing algorithms.
Support for additional tracking sources (SteamVR Trackers, etc.).
Interface localization into more languages.
Ability to save and load custom user presets.
Expanded "out of the box" presets for popular games.
A more intuitive and user-friendly configuration interface.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version of BodyWalkVR is fully functional and provides the core features: body lean locomotion and physical jumping. Support for SlimeVR and smartphones is implemented. Output modes via SteamVR Hook, VRChat OSC, Xbox 360 Controller, and Keyboard are available. The software is stable and ready for daily VR use.”

Will this software be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to keep the price stable. It might be slightly adjusted only if major new functional modules are added.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We actively communicate with users through Steam Forums and Discord. Every feedback about incompatibility or configuration issues directly impacts our development priorities. We plan to conduct regular surveys to decide on the development direction of new features.”

About This Software

BodyWalkVR — OpenXR Locomotion Driver for SteamVR

An OpenXR API Layer and SteamVR utility that translates physical body motion into virtual locomotion input. Works with SlimeVR trackers and smartphone-based setups via OSC and UDP protocols.

What It Is

BodyWalkVR installs as a registered OpenXR API Layer, extending the SteamVR runtime's input pipeline. It receives rotation data from body-mounted trackers and injects precise locomotion vectors directly into SteamVR — enabling hands-free movement in any SteamVR or OpenXR-compatible title without per-game configuration.

Technical Features

  • OpenXR API Layer — Registers as a system-level OpenXR extension, loaded automatically by the SteamVR OpenXR runtime on Windows.

  • SteamVR Input Hook — Injects locomotion input directly into SteamVR's controller pipeline. No game modifications required.

  • 4 Output Modes — SteamVR Hook, VRChat OSC, Xbox 360 Controller (ViGEm), or Keyboard WASD.

  • OSC + UDP Protocol Support — Receives tracker data from SlimeVR (OSC) or BodyWalkTracker smartphone app (UDP).

  • Optimized C++ Core — Sub-millisecond sensor filtering. Configurable linear/exponential response curve.

  • Physical Jump Detection — Detects real-life vertical acceleration and maps it to in-game jump input.

  • Live Diagnostic UI — Real-time joystick canvas, delta-Y jump bar, and input monitoring for calibration.

How It Works

  • Layer Registration — Installs as a Windows OpenXR API Layer, registered in the system registry and loaded by the SteamVR runtime automatically at launch.

  • Sensor Data — Receives high-fidelity torso rotation via OSC (SlimeVR) or UDP (BodyWalkTracker). Sub-millisecond precision.

  • Input Injection — Translates lean angles and jump impulses into locomotion vectors, delivered through SteamVR input, OSC, or emulated gamepad.

Compatibility

  • SteamVR and all OpenXR-compatible VR headsets (Meta, Valve Index, Pico, WMR)

  • SlimeVR full-body tracker setups

  • Android smartphones as body trackers (no extra hardware needed)

  • All SteamVR games — universal, no per-game setup
