What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Salt & Storms is a deep maritime simulation with interconnected systems — sailing, trading, crew management, combat, and exploration. Early Access lets us put the core gameplay loop in players' hands while we continue adding content and polish. Player feedback on balance (trading economy, sailing difficulty, crew survival) is essential to getting the simulation right before a full release.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“6 to 12 months. The core systems (sailing, trading, combat, crew management) are complete and playable. The remaining work focuses on content expansion (more ports, quests, events, discoveries), quality-of-life improvements, and features shaped by community feedback.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to expand the game in several directions based on what players enjoy most. Areas we're exploring include more ports and trade routes, additional storylines and events, new things to discover at sea, deeper crew interactions, and more ship variety. Community feedback during Early Access will help shape which areas get the most attention. Our goal is a richer, more polished experience that grows naturally from what players tell us matters most.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game features a complete gameplay loop: outfit your ship, hire crew, plan voyages between Caribbean ports, manage sails and crew assignments during travel, trade goods for profit, survive storms and encounters, and engage in naval combat. Current content includes 14 ports, 45+ voyage events, 16 quests, a full combat system with cannon broadsides and boarding, 150+ trade goods, pixel art visuals, and original music. Expect 5-10+ hours of gameplay in the current build.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to gradually raise the price as we ship new content and features.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We actively monitor Steam discussions and reviews for feedback on gameplay balance, feature requests, and bug reports. Community input directly influences development priorities — especially around sailing difficulty tuning, trading economy balance, and quality-of-life improvements. Patch notes are published with each update so players can follow development progress.”

About This Game

Command Your Ship

Outfit your vessel with cargo holds, crew quarters, kitchens, and cannons. Choose from 5 hull types — from nimble sloops to mighty galleons — and view your ship in detailed cross-section.

Build Your Crew

Recruit from 11 archetypes, each with unique skills and personalities. Assign them to sailing, steering, cooking, lookout, maintenance, or rest. An experienced crew can weather storms that would break a green one.

Sail the Caribbean

Real sailing physics — trim your sails, read the wind, and navigate dynamic weather systems. Random events, crew needs, and tough choices make every voyage unique.

Trade and Prosper

Visit various ports, each with their own specialties and supply-and-demand pricing. Buy low, sell high, and transport passengers to build your fortune.

Procedural Everything

Handcrafted pixel art combined with procedural generation creates billions of unique crew members, dynamic time-of-day lighting, and procedural ambient audio. No two playthroughs look the same.

Early Access

Salt & Storms is in active development. Coming soon: ship-to-ship combat, fleet management, black market trading, and more.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Some art assets (cargo icons, music tracks, marketing images) were created with assistance from AI generation tools and refined by the developer. All game code, design, and gameplay systems are human-created. No AI content is generated at runtime during gameplay.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

The game features naval combat with cannon broadsides and crew boarding actions depicted in stylized pixel art. Crew members can be injured or killed in battle, storms, and from disease. Gameplay includes alcohol consumption (rum rations, tavern scenes) and piracy and smuggling as core activities.

System Requirements

    Minimum:
    • OS: Windows 10 (64-bit)
    • Processor: Intel Core i3 / AMD equivalent, 1.5 GHz dual-core
    • Memory: 2 GB RAM
    • Graphics: OpenGL 3.3 compatible (Intel HD 4000 or equivalent)
    • Storage: 500 MB available space
    • Sound Card: Any
    • Additional Notes: Requires OpenGL 3.3 support
    Recommended:
    • OS: Windows 10/11 (64-bit)
    • Processor: Intel Core i5 / AMD Ryzen 3 or better
    • Memory: 4 GB RAM
    • Graphics: Dedicated GPU with OpenGL 3.3+ (NVIDIA GTX 660 / AMD HD 7870 or better)
    • Storage: 500 MB available space
    • Sound Card: Any
    • Additional Notes: Dedicated GPU recommended for smooth procedural sprite rendering The 500 MB disk space gives ~200 MB headroom over the current build for future content and save files. Memory/CPU are conservative since it's a 2D game, but the procedural sprite generation benefits from a decent CPU and dedicated GPU.
