What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“This is a tool that we expect to maintain and add new features to for the foreseeable future, early access is the best way to communicate that intention.”

Approximately how long will this software be in Early Access?

“Until we can't think of anything else to add, maybe forever. It is important to understand that this is a tool that we actively use and it is always going to be tweaked and improved for as long as we continue to use it.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We expect Swanky Paint to grow and iterate through feedback so although there are many features we want to add we have no idea where we will actually end up.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Useable, but rough around the edges. Please take a look at our tutorial and release videos to evaluate the current state of development for yourself.”

Will this software be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We expect to slowly raise the price on Steam as features are added and we release new versions.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We have already added requested features in previous updates and intend to continue to do so. Obviously some features can be a lot of work but often we can easily add something smaller that can help even if it is not a full solution.”

Official Release: Swanky Paint Alpha +11 is now here!

Thank you for being here and supporting Swanky Paint all these years!

When we first started developing, we didn't know it was going to grow to become the software that it is now. This was more a tiny experiment and tribute to the fantastic Deluxe Paint.

Swanky Paint will remain to be a niche application for those who love creating within the retro limitations of old hardware in years to come.

We've got so many things we want to show and implement - but there are only the two of us developing this in our spare time so development is slow but surely. Thank you for your patience!

We hope you enjoy the new features and additions. It has been an intense few months leading up to this release. And we hope you stick around for the new things coming to our beloved pixel pushing application!

xoxo

Swanky Paint Alpha +11 : Part 5 FINALE - Recap & Wrap up

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mkoi1AzOL6I
We’re almost there! The official release of Alpha +11 is tomorrow!

This will be the last video in the series before the launch but we’ve had so much fun doing them, we might peep in new updates with more ‘How to’ videos so watch out for those.

By the way, if you ever want us to do a specific video about a feature or certain techniques, drop us a note!

Without further ado, here be the new things and fixes for the new version.

  • History is saved with each file so you can undo even after you close a file.
    Ctrl+Z - undo
    Ctrl+Y - redo
    Shift+U - undo
U still works the same (does a redo until there is no redo available - in which case, it does an undo)
  • Wrap mode now available in Config > Prefs > Wrap (preview tiling in drawing area)
  • Draw anywhere in tiles, updates in drawing area
  • Added Dither
Dither window appears when you load true color images
  • Access all available windows in current window
    Click > to Windows...

  • Fixed temporary image ghosts
  • Fixed brush ghosting
  • Fixed Layer > Process > Flatten Layers doesn't work (creates a new image)
  • Fixed Layers being remembered in Config -> Prefs when saved
  • Fixed Brush pickup outside draw area error
  • Fixed Preferences for layers (no longer set to global)
  • Fixed Frame > Add a frame (Shift+2 still works)
  • Fixed Undo with image resize
  • Fixed Undo with palette remap
  • Fixed Swapping frames crashing application
  • Fixed number updating for Sliders in Colors
  • Capitalise 'Contrast' in Dither window
  • Fixed Dither to update values at 100% image scale
  • Fixed typo Dither > Red goes up to 180 when it should be 100
  • Fixed Layer compositing slowing down application
  • Fixed Frames duplicate

  • Display new icons for tools when in use
  • Added Pipette icon
  • Added Pr icon (processing - applying attribute clash / reduce color palette / apply effect over current image)
  • Added Slide icon
  • RemapTo palette and brush will not dither by default
  • Added hover text to newer tools
  • Include palette in New image presets
  • Display current Paint mode
  • Regroup menu drop downs
  • Allow Dither for paletted files
  • Update Images menu with preferences and image list

  • When opening / loading / saving an image, you can edit the url of the file destination
  • Add custom 8-bit palettes or presets to
    $HOME/Pictures/swankypaint/presets
We scan for these files at startup and add them to the Palette Editor menu.
    Palette - filename.pal.png
    Preset - filename.set.png

It's almost time! We're posting videos of the new features you'll be seeing in the next version of Swanky Paint leading up to the official release party on the 4th of August, 2018 so see you next time!

Reviews

“Although in the early alpha stage of release, Swanky Paint shows real promise. For fans of Deluxe Paint, it’s certainly worth trying out for its low cost and wide range of features.”
4/5 – MagPi Magazine issue 36

“Where Deluxe Paint had its pixels on show due to the low resolution of computing equipment at the time, though, Swanky Paint revels in it. Designed for retro ‘pixel-art’ projects, the software makes everything as easy as possible and includes a surprising level of polish for an early alpha release – including various effects designed to emulate the smoothing glow of a traditional CRT display.”
Gareth Halfacree

“Easy to use and very precise - Swanky Paint is the perfect introduction to pixel art!”
Sludgefeast Magazine

About This Software

A modern Deluxe Paint tribute built using our open source game engine, Gamecake.

It is a perfect tool for creating pixel art and animation.

Deluxe Paint is a well designed bitmap graphics editor from the 80s that ran on the Commodore Amiga.

To this day, we still find it the best package out there for its purpose and we have yet to find anything close to it in terms of usability and design. We have tried other pixel editors but still keep coming back to an old copy that we still use every now and then for our games.

However, as times goes by, we find an increasing need for an actual replacement that is not only up-to-date but more importantly, cross platform (Linux/Win/Raspi/Android/Mac). So here is our attempt at recreating our favourite paint package for today's generation of pixel artists.

It should be noted that this is currently in active development so will contain bugs.

Features:
  • We don't have a file format - anything created on Swanky Paint can be opened in ANY art software
  • Runs on Linux, Raspberry Pi, Android, Windows & Mac
  • Deluxe Paint shortcuts
  • Escher modes: Hexels, non-Euclidean, strange geometry
  • Bloom shader options
  • Full resolution background image for tracing and referencing
  • Multiple layers support
  • Simple animation frames
  • Spritesheet support
  • GIF and APNG import to frames
  • Supports SVG, GIF, JPG, PNG and APNG import & export
  • Supports Fun64 clipboard conversion to ASCII
  • Dithering options for paletted and true colour images
  • Wrap mode for tiling preview, edit anywhere to update the draw area
  • Ultimate undo remembers your history forever
  • Export your image history as a GIF
  • Supports 15 popular colour palettes like Pico8, DawnBringer, C64, ZXSpectrum, NES, Gameboy, MSX, AppleII, EGA, Swanky32 & more
  • Import custom palettes and presets
  • Support for Lua scripting
  • Support for UV mapping preview on to low poly 3D model

These are some of the features that are already included in the current version. We are still adding more during development.

Swanky Art, a new kind of pixel art community.

On International Amiga Day 2014, we released Swanky Art, a pixel art community based on daily challenges that restricts your palettes, dimensions and filters.

Our aim is to fully recreate the restrictions of the past, teaching attribute clash to a new and terrified generation.
