What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I’m a solo developer working on Captain Capy, and I want to be completely transparent about why I chose Early Access. In short, I believe the game will grow better with community feedback. Even a resourceful capybara astronaut can use a crew of friends – and in this case, you (the players) are that crew.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I anticipate that Captain Capy will be in Early Access for roughly 6 to 12 months, but this is a soft estimate. As a one-person dev team, I want to give myself the flexibility to respond to feedback and polish the game without rushing. My hope is that about a year or less will be enough time to add the content and improvements I have planned, but I’m not setting a hard deadline.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of Captain Capy will have more content, more polish, and potentially extra features compared to the initial Early Access build. Early Access is basically the foundation – the core gameplay is there – and my plan is to build on that foundation with lots of improvements for 1.0. Here are some of the main things I intend to add or enhance by the time the game fully releases:

More Areas & Challenges: I plan to expand the universe with additional space zones/levels to explore. The Early Access version might start with a limited set of sectors (for example, a few derelict ships or space habitats to salvage in); the full game will likely include new environments, each with unique challenges and scenery. Along with that, expect more missions and events as the adventure grows.

Enemies & Bosses: The rogue AI menace will get more variety in its minions! I’m aiming to introduce new enemy types (beyond the initial drones/robots) and several boss encounters. The full version will likely culminate in an epic final showdown against the rogue AI itself. Essentially, you’ll face a wider range of foes requiring different tactics, keeping combat fresh.

Crafting & Upgrades: Since this is a space crafter game, I have plans to broaden the crafting system. The full game should feature more salvageable materials and crafting recipes. You’ll be able to build/craft additional upgrades, tools, and maybe even vehicle or base upgrades. Captain Capy’s gadget arsenal will grow, giving you new abilities and ways to approach problems. I’m also considering a deeper upgrade tree so players can customize Capy’s playstyle further (based on what feedback I get about the current system).

Story & Lore: In Early Access you’ll get the beginning of the story – why a capybara is in space and the first encounters with the rogue AI. For the 1.0 release, I plan to flesh out the narrative completely. That means more story events or logs, possibly some friendly NPCs or AI companions to meet, and a proper beginning-middle-end to Capy’s adventure. My goal is to have a satisfying conclusion to the rogue AI storyline in the full version (no spoilers!). The lore of the world will be expanded, giving context to the missions and locations you explore.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“As of the Early Access launch, Captain Capy: Roguelike Space Crafter is fully playable in its core loop, and already offers a fun slice of the gameplay experience. You can jump in and start exploring, scavenging, crafting, and fighting right away. That said, it’s an early build, so keep in mind there’s more content and refinement to come.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, I do plan on the pricing to change after Early Access. During Early Access, Captain Capy is available at a lower price. This is both a thank-you to early supporters and a reflection that the game isn’t finished yet. I really appreciate everyone who jumps in early to help me develop and improve the game, and pricing it a bit lower is one way to show that appreciation.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community involvement is at the heart of why I’m doing Early Access. I’m a firm believer that player feedback can elevate a game to the next level. From day one, I plan to keep an open line of communication and make it easy for players to share their thoughts, ideas, and concerns. Here’s how you can be involved and how I’ll be interacting with you throughout development:
- Discord
- Reddit”

About This Game

Captain Capy: Roguelike Space Crafter

Captain Capy: Roguelike Space Crafter puts you in the four-toed feet of the galaxy’s most unlikely hero, a capybara astronaut. Armed with a ramshackle ship and an endless sense of wonder, Captain Capy ventures into a dangerous asteroid belt filled with derelict ships, glittering salvage, and the lurking threat of a rogue AI. The game blends cozy charm with adrenaline-fueled action, delivering a classic roguelike experience with a whimsical twist.

As a 2D space shooter with rich crafting mechanics, gameplay revolves around exploration, improvisation, and intense combat. Each run through the asteroid field is unique, presenting new procedurally-generated challenges and surprises. Blast apart debris and enemy drones to collect scrap, then craft upgrades on the fly, turning piles of junk into potent weapons, shields, and gadgets.

Every piece of salvage can be repurposed into something useful, whether it’s a laser cannon built from spare parts or armor plating hammered out of old satellite panels. But beware: the rogue AI overseeing this sector isn’t about to let a capybara scavenge freely, and it will throw swarms of robotic foes and hulking boss ships in your path.

Persistence pays off. Between runs, you’ll return to your base to unlock permanent upgrades and tinker with your ship. Carry over precious materials or data to improve Captain Capy’s chances on the next expedition – new engine modules, stronger hulls, enhanced crafting blueprints, and more become available as you progress.

Each defeat is a learning experience, allowing you to dive back in a little stronger and a lot wiser. Whether you’re a hardcore roguelike fan or just love a good space adventure, Captain Capy offers a journey that is equal parts heartwarming and thrilling, combining the pulse-pounding replayability of an action roguelike with the cozy vibes of a lighthearted sci-fi tale.
