What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Game of Mods is a creator platform as much as a game, and it gets better the more people build inside it. Early Access lets us grow the creator tools, the Workshop library, and the on-device character AI in the open, with real makers telling us what matters. The features that ship should be the ones creators ask for, not the ones we guessed at.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Around six months is our honest target. We would rather let creator feedback set the pace than rush a date. We will leave Early Access when the creator tools and the journey library feel complete and the toolchain is stable enough that development is about polish rather than fundamentals.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version deepens what is already here: richer NPC behavior and persona depth, more beat types and cinematic control in the journey editor, expanded voice and narration, stronger Workshop discovery, and a larger library of journeys and characters to learn from and remix. The on-device AI core stays the same; we are growing what you can do with it.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Fully playable today. You can talk to AI characters by voice or keyboard, with dialogue generated on your Mac and no account or cloud service. A built-in five-minute tutorial, First Steps, teaches the controls by voice. Studio lets you author NPCs, player characters, journeys, and spaces, and publish them to Steam Workshop; browsing and subscribing work from inside the game. The Construct workbench and a voice-driven menu Host are live. Where we are honestly: voice, conversation, and character visuals are the heart of the game and have had our attention. Game-world environments are still basic and will grow over Early Access.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. The Early Access price is lower than the eventual full-release price. Anyone who buys during Early Access gets the full game at 1.0 at no extra cost. Early buyers are the creators shaping this with us, and the price reflects that.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community creation is the point. Steam Workshop is central: players publish, browse, subscribe to, and remix each other's characters, journeys, and spaces, so the library grows with its players. We gather feedback through the Steam Community Hub and Discord, prioritize creator-requested tools on the roadmap, and spotlight standout community work.”

About This Game

Characters you can actually talk to

Every character in Game of Mods is driven by a language model running on your Mac. Walk up and speak, or type: they answer aloud in their own voice, remember the conversation, and stay in character. Nothing leaves your machine. No account, no cloud, no API key.

Voice first, keyboard always

The whole game is designed to be played by voice. Navigate the menus, start a journey, and talk to characters just by speaking. Prefer a keyboard? Every voice path has a typed twin: at the main menu, in the pause screen, and in the world. Vision-impaired players are a first-class audience, not an afterthought.

Start with First Steps

A built-in five-minute tutorial. The Host walks you through moving, looking, approaching a character, talking, pausing, and leaving. No reading required.

Journeys

A journey is a short authored story: scenes, cinematic shots, and beats that react to what you do and say, with characters who have their own goals. Play ours, play the community's, then make your own.

Make your own in Studio

  • NPCs: personality, voice, what they know and what they refuse to discuss, and a VRM avatar
  • Player characters: your own avatar with its own voice
  • Journeys: scenes, shots, beats, conditions and actions, per-chapter audio
  • Spaces: the places journeys happen in
Mods are data, not code: JSON plus VRM and GLB assets. There is no scripting engine, so a mod can never run code on anyone's machine. Import VRM 1.0 avatars and the license embedded in the file is checked before the mod can ship.

Steam Workshop

Browse, subscribe, and play mods without leaving the game. Publish your own; a validation pass catches broken bundles before anything is uploaded.

The Construct

A 3D workbench where you talk to an Operator and load assets and avatars. Jack in, try things, jack out.

Built for Apple Silicon

Metal 4 rendering, VRM characters, on-device Gemma 4 dialogue, and Apple speech recognition and synthesis. Playable on an 8 GB M1. 16 GB unified memory recommended for the smoothest conversations.

Early Access

Characters, voice, and the creator tools are the heart of the game and are where our effort has gone. Environments are still simple and will grow through Early Access. What the community builds will shape this as much as anything we ship.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

authored story beats with AI-generated connective dialogue, local inference (no cloud), and voice synthesis for character differentiation

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

Game of Mods is a voice-first game about talking to AI characters. Dialogue is generated on-device by AI models (Apple and Google) with their built-in safety safeguards active. Characters may wear revealing or close-fitting outfits, and conversations can include innuendo, sex-related language, and infrequent strong language. All characters are adults. There is no explicit sexual content, graphic violence, or depiction of sexual assault, drug or alcohol abuse, or self-harm. Game of Mods supports Steam Workshop: user-created mods are authored by third parties, are not produced or controlled by the developer, and may contain mature themes within the game's declared rating.
