What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The time has finally come for more mechanics to join the game! After a few years in development, we finally have a good portion of the game foundation in place. The game now offers a lot of creative fun in its current state.
We’re now at a point where we need your feedback so that we can evolve the game in the best possible direction – together.

Scrap Mechanic is unique creative building game that allows you to build amazing machines and creations, and we want to see how far the players can push the game; this’ll enable us to take notes and make improvements.

We aim to keep a good experience trough the Early Access period as we add new building pieces, features and an awesome survival mode.

Alpha access includes the full game on release as well as all coming updates!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Since we take the feedback we get from the community incredibly seriously, our workflow has to be flexible and intuitive which makes it more difficult to give a exact final release date. We need to make sure we have enough time to improve the game with the feedback we collect and make sure that the survival mode will be as awesome as our mechanics would come to expect.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Now that we have the Creative Mode in place, we’re going to work on the ambitious Survival Mode. Mechanics can look forward to a huge new open world to explore with buildings that can be scavenged and taken apart, a day and night cycle, deadly enemies to fight, weapons and explosives that can be used in many creative ways, further character customization, new awesome building parts and tools and an improved multiplayer function. Last but not least, there’ll of course be improvements based on all the feedback we collect. There are more things in the pipeline for Survival Mode, but we’d like to keep some stuff as a surprise.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“A big part of the game’s core features are already in place. The current version has a robust Creative Mode with over 100 unique pieces to build with. A bunch of powerful tools and an easy-to-use handbook will help you get started with building, so we think you’ll be getting everything a player needs to create the most fantastic machines and creations together with their friends.

We ask you to bear in mind that Scrap Mechanic is still in the process of being made and things will change between now and the final release, and that even though the game is very playable in its current state, bugs and occasional crashes can happen as we continue developing the game.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Scrap Mechanic will have a lower price during Early Access compared to the final full release. However Alpha Access includes the full game upon release in addition to all coming updates!”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We frequently communicate through Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and forums. We post videos and devblogs to keep the players up to date on our latest progress. We take in as much feedback as we possibly can from our awesome players, but the sheer amount of comments and posts mean that it’s not always possible for us to respond individually all the time. We focus on everything we receive that’s constructive and helpful, and we keep adding to and improving the game based on the feedback we collect.

The Community is hugely important to us: after all, we’re making this game for you!”

Update 0.3.2

Hi Mechanics!

Time for a little improvement update!
Thanks to all mechanics for the help testing it out during the test! We got some great feedback as always.
We’ve been looking at all the creative ways you use the new explosives and decided to do some further improvements.
For example, blowing up larger creations with a lot of explosives should now run a bit smoother.
We also did some other fixes!

Check out the update list:
  • Parts that are split of from creations inherit the velocities of the creation.
  • Optimized explosions.
  • The range that explosions remove metal has been reduced.
  • Changed the particle effect that appears on the point where potatoes hit the gas canister.
  • Tweaked the explosion impulse on players.
  • Fixed connect tool attaching to invisible gas canister connection points.
  • Fixed a networking issue that caused crashes when playing as a client.
  • Fixed a rendering issue that could cause a crash when some parts were destroyed by an explosion.
  • Fixed an issue where the impulses (from thruster and modded parts) were applied with half strength if the game was running on low fps.
  • Multiple explosion impulses on the character have less effect.
  • More explosion debris particles should now be visible.
  • Mods with no translation for the selected language will now default to English.
  • Added more helpful error messages.
  • Fix for lowest playable resolution (1024x768) defaulting to 1280x720.
  • Lua API updates (no breaking changes).
  • Scripted interactive parts no longer incorrectly show up as buttons when connected to a seat.
  • Character impulses are applied per tick instead of every frame.
  • Fixed "Server started with mismatching developer mode flags" issue when loading games.
  • Fixed a networking related crash.
  • Fixed a crash that was caused by an invalid terrain generation script or an invalid world builder terrain.

Time for us to go back working on Survival mode and Challange mode.
Both are coming along nicely!

About This Game

PLEASE NOTE: We’re still at work on Scrap Mechanic! Get started right away in Creative Mode, and get ready for Survival Mode coming in a later update.

Welcome to the machine-filled creative paradise of Scrap Mechanic, a multiplayer
sandbox game with imagination and ingenuity at its core.

Scrap Mechanic is an all-new creative multiplayer sandbox game which drops you right into a world where you quite literally engineer your own adventures! Choose from the 100+ building parts you have at your disposal and create anything from crazy transforming vehicles to a house that moves. You’re even able to team up with your friends to create amazing things together: in Scrap Mechanic, you’re the master creator of anything you can imagine!

Here’s the deal: you’re a robot maintenance mechanic en route to your posting on a fully-automated agriculture planet. Your job is to take care of the worker robots as they work the land, sending the food they produce to the metropolitan planets. Thing is, close to touchdown your spacecraft loses control and crashes, but since you’ve got luck on your side (erm…), you survive! You’re stranded though, and at first glance you find that not everything’s quite as it should be. The Farmbots working the fields have gone crazy, and now there’s only one way to stay alive: using your quick thinking, your creativity and your wily knack of turning your surroundings to your advantage.

Let’s pop the hood and see what’s on offer right now:

  • Creative Mode!
An unlimited amount of parts are yours to play with! Build free on your choice of terrain without limitations or the threat of death.

  • Gender!
Choose between playing as a male or female mechanic.

  • Parts ‘n’ Blocks!
Scrap Mechanic comes loaded with over 100 parts. Some with unique shapes and sizes, but all giving you the power to basically create anything you want.

  • Interactive Parts!
The interactive parts that let you put your creations in motion represent the very best and most exciting parts of Scrap Mechanic! With a wide range of parts and an array of functions from gas and electric engines to thrusters, sensors and buttons, you’ll never be bored with the tools at your disposal!

  • Handbook!
Your Mechanics’ Handbook is your trusty educational friend, with you from the start and dying to be read! Flip trough its pages at your leisure to learn the basics of building in a easy way.

  • Connect Tool!
The tool that brings everything together and makes it all happen. A must for any true mechanic!

  • Lift!
Lightens the load when building creations with physics in mind. Let it lift you – and your creations – higher!

  • Sledgehammer!
Whack loose parts and watch them fly. Smacking physics around with the hammer is great fun.
