What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Back to Ground Zero is an evolving project inspired by the Backrooms. Early Access allows me to expand the game with players feedback, add more features and content, and bring in stories from the Backrooms wiki and the community. Together, we can build something truly unique and terrifying.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Back to Ground Zero will stay in Early Access until it reaches a full and stable version, which I estimate will take about 2 to 3 years. This time will allow for continuous updates, deeper content, community-driven improvements, and full mod support. The game’s world is massive, and I want to give it the time it needs to grow into a true Backrooms horror experience.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to add more features and content throughout Early Access, including mod support, additional stories and levels, new gameplay elements, potential multiplayer functionality, performance improvements, and expanded language support.

Our goal is to deliver a deeper and more polished horror experience by listening closely to community feedback and evolving the game together over time.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version of Back to Ground Zero is fully playable and includes the core gameplay systems, one complete story, horror mechanics, and the foundation of its main features.

It already offers an immersive experience, but it’s still early in development. Features like mod support, multiplayer, and additional stories or levels are not yet implemented.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. The price will gradually increase as new content, features, and improvements are added throughout Early Access. Early supporters will get the game at a lower price while helping shape its development.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community feedback is at the heart of Back to Ground Zero’s development. I’ll be actively listening to players on Steam, Discord, and Reddit to improve the game, fix issues, and shape future content. From gameplay tweaks to new stories and features, the community will play a major role—especially with planned mod support that will open the door for player-created content.”

About This Game

BTGZ:FC is a non-traditional, multi-story horror experience inspired by the Backrooms. Explore the hidden truths of the liminal world through the eyes of multiple characters.

Each chapter brings a fresh perspective, new mechanics, and deeper insight into the dark reality buried within the levels.

Throughout your journey, you’ll uncover more about M.E.G, Architect Industries, B.L.S.A.I.D, and several other groups each with their own motives, secrets and roles.

Short version: A group of scientists were experimenting with energy generation when they accidentally opened a portal to a non-stable liminal space, a place filled with hostile entities, radiation, and dangerous anomalies.
Soon after, they sent a team of explorers through the portal, only to discover that they weren’t the first to enter. other people called M.E.G. and Architect Industries had already made contact with this place.
These explorers were not fully prepared for what awaited them deep in the tunnels. many were killed. others simply vanished without a trace.
After losing several members of the exploration team, they deployed a well-equipped remote-controlled drone to collect data, secure the area, and uncover the secrets hidden within.

As mentioned before, each story will have its own unique gameplay mechanics and elements. However, some features may be shared across multiple chapters, especially when the stories are connected, part of a sequel, or involve recurring characters within the levels.

One example is the Locator Device: a tool created by M.E.G. with two main functions:

  • Scanner application: Upload or capture transmissions floating in the ether, such as images, videos, audio, or text files.
Captured transmissions are saved to your data log, allowing you to review them at any time: Listen to audio, watch videos, view images, or read discovered text files.

  • Scanner settings application: Detect specific items in the levels by selecting their material properties. You can filter by a single parameter or combine multiple ones to isolate a specific item.

Additionally, the Locator Device can interface with map devices. This allows certain entities or items to appear on your scanner and be marked directly on your map.

  • This is the initial release of the game, and it currently includes only one story: Dark Tunnels.

  • The game is still under active development, new features, mechanics, and stories will be added based on the Backrooms Wiki, community feedback and suggestions as free updates in the future.
