What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Backyard Bayou is built on fast, replayable runs, and that kind of game only gets better with real players hammering on it. Early Access lets me get the core combat, items, and enemy variety into players' hands now, then tune balance, fix bugs, and add content based on how people actually play it. Feedback on what feels good, what builds dominate, and what enemies frustrate will directly shape where the game goes.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I plan for roughly a year and a half in Early Access, though that may shift depending on the scope of feedback and how the content roadmap evolves. The goal is to leave Early Access once the game feels complete and stable rather than rushing to a fixed date.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I plan to expand the game significantly over Early Access. A major focus is maturing co-op multiplayer from its current experimental state into a polished, stable headline feature. Beyond that, planned additions include a deeper corruption system where stacking power visibly transforms the character, more enemies, bosses, items, and points of interest, additional environments, and meta-progression between runs. I also plan to add localization for more languages. The core run-based loop will stay the same — the goal is to deepen and broaden it, not replace it.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is fully playable from start to finish. A run starts at the cabin, you head into procedurally varied stretches of swamp, fight off enemies that spawn continuously, find and activate a ritual site to summon a boss, then defeat and harvest it to loop into harder territory. Combat, movement, the momentum system, a full roster of weapons, melee options, abilities, and dozens of stacking items are all in and working, along with multiple enemy types and bosses. Online co-op is included but in an early, experimental state — you can invite a Steam friend and play through a run together, but expect rough edges: enemy and animation syncing, independent equipment, and other multiplayer behaviors are still being worked on. The game is English only for now, and balance, content, and co-op stability will keep growing throughout Early Access.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will stay the same throughout Early Access. I plan to set a higher price for the 1.0 release to reflect the more complete, polished game it will have grown into by then.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I plan to stay closely involved with the community through the Steam forums and discussions, using player feedback to guide balance changes, prioritize new content, and catch bugs. Player input on builds, difficulty, and what they want to see more of will directly influence the development roadmap.”

About This Game

Backyard Bayou is a third-person roguelike shooter where something ancient woke up in the swamp behind the cabin and the old man living there is more annoyed than afraid.

Tentacled horrors, corrupted creatures, and things that shouldn't exist are crawling out of the bayou and onto the porch. He doesn't run. He grabs the shotgun, steps off the porch, and goes to clear them out.

Each run drops you into a shifting stretch of swamp. Push deeper, hunt down the ritual site, and tear through whatever gets summoned to stop you. The harder you fight and the faster you move, the more momentum builds and the deeper you can go before the bayou pushes back.

Every run is built from the items you find. Stack them, synergize them, and turn a tired old man into something the swamp should've left alone. Execute your build badly and the swamp wins.

Features:

- Fast, aggressive third-person combat built around momentum and movement

- Run based roguelike progression items stack, synergize, and reshape every run

- Explore the swamp, find the ritual site, summon the boss, harvest it, go again

- Lovecraftian dread meets Louisiana bayou atmosphere

- Tight ~20-minute runs, just one more

- Online co-op in early access — invite a Steam friend and clear the swamp together (experimental, more to come)

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

Backyard Bayou is a third-person roguelite shooter set in a Lovecraftian swamp. The player fights off eldritch monsters using firearms and melee weapons. The game contains stylized, arcade-style violence against fictional creatures — including monster deaths and combat effects — alongside dark, eerie horror atmosphere and imagery. It does not contain sexual content, nudity, real-world drug or alcohol use, self-harm, or violence directed at real-world groups.
