What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“As a solo developer, I’m using Early Access to gather real-world feedback and refine the core experience based on what players enjoy most. The Backrooms are all about atmosphere, tension, and subtle narrative elements. These things benefit greatly from community insight. Early Access lets me develop the game more transparently while shaping it alongside a supportive community.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I estimate the game will remain in Early Access for around 6–12 months. This allows time to expand the number of levels and enemies, enhance enemy behaviors, polish the visuals and audio, and integrate community feedback at a steady, realistic pace for a solo project.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Planned Features for future updates:

*More handcrafted levels with unique themes and mechanics.
*Improved textures, sprites, sound design, and environmental storytelling.
*More fleshed-out AI for threats and chases.
*Collectibles, documents, or recordings that expand the Backrooms lore.
*Additional quality-of-life features like customizable settings and controller support.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version features:

Several complete, atmospheric levels.
Core first-person movement and flashlight mechanics and items like almond water, and coins.
Functional enemies.
Sound and lighting designed to support an immersive horror experience.
It’s playable, but it’s still in need of balance, polish, and many more levels and expanded content.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, the final release will likely be priced slightly higher to reflect the added content and polish. Early Access supporters will get the game at a lower price as a thank you for helping shape its development.

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I’ll be actively listening to player feedback through Steam forums and possibly a dedicated Discord. I’ll post regular updates and devlogs, and I’m especially interested in feedback on pacing, level design, enemy types and scare effectiveness.”

About This Game

The Backrooms: Reset is a first-person survival horror exploration game.
Step into the Backrooms — a labyrinth of shifting halls and eerie, liminal environments. In this roguelike survival experience, the layout of the Backrooms remains constant, but each playthrough presents new challenges. You'll spawn in different locations each time, with every item and encounter dynamically altered. Clues are scarce, and exploration is key. Death resets your progress back to the beginning.

The Story

On October 3rd, 1996, a VHS tape was discovered in the back room of a shuttered video rental store in rural Ohio. The contents appeared to document the final known movements of a [REDACTED] who vanished without a trace. What you are about to witness is the unaltered footage recovered from that tape. Authorities never identified the subject. No missing persons case was ever filed. The individual was never found.

Features

  • Large, maze-like levels inspired by the Backrooms Wiki

  • Entities from Backrooms lore, including Death Moths, Partygoers, Smilers, Wretches, and more

  • Randomized item spawns to help you survive — including Almond Water and energy drinks

This game is an original interpretation of the Backrooms concept and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any other media or creators.
