Catastrophic Inversion is a VR shooter made for large shared spaces using real movement through space-warping, multi-story arenas. Join cross-platform with Meta Quest from stationary VR or join in real space if you have a portable PCVR device. This also acts as a dedicated server and spectator.

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are a very small independent hobbyist studio working on this in our free time, so progress is slow, but the game is currently fully-playable as an Arena Shooter and we have gotten overwhelmingly positive feedback from those who have played it, and are opening up to a larger group to participate as we implement new features and playstyles.

We wanted to make sure the PC edition is available as it contains a dedicated server and spectator camera, which provides a more stable experience than hosting from a Meta Quest standalone headset.

PCVR is also included in this edition, but it has not been thoroughly tested and only on Meta Air Link. It might not work on other headsets, but we'd love to hear feedback from players with other setups.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“It will hopefully be feature complete and leave early access by late 2026.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We are planning to additional game modes, weapons, levels, and enemy behavior for optional bot players.

We are also planning a co-op campaign with group traversal of notably larger procedural environments.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is optimized for Meta Quest and we have not put as much effort into polishing the PCVR edition. While it runs fairly smoothly in PCVR in our testing, there are some issues with the graphics, including rendering of some of the transparent materials, and we have not tested it in PCVR on non-Meta headsets.

It's currently fully-playable as a VR Arena Shooter capable of handling at least 10 players on a stable local WiFi network. There are more than 10 maps, 5 weapons, and a variety of game rule customizations.

It can be played in large spaces with natural movement as well as in small spaces with Joystick or Teleport Locomotion.

The PC version can be used as a dedicated server and spectator camera.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Once the PCVR mode has been polished and we are satisfied with the quality, the price will roughly double to match the price of the Meta Quest version.

After that, pricing will likely remain unchanged even after the full release. After we've built up a significant collection of maps included with initial purchase, we might start to release occasional map packs for a reasonable price as paid DLC.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We have a suggestion box and roadmap published on our website that allows for suggestion and voting on features.

We also have a Beta channel available on Meta Quest that allows particularly adventurous players to test out the newest features.”

About This Game

Catastrophic Inversion is a multiplayer VR shooter made for large shared spaces, allowing players to naturally move among each other in massive levels with space-warping tricks to make them feel even bigger.

Combatants face off in a variety of game modes including Capture-The-Flag, Deathmatch, and Elimination, with many adjustable settings. You can also mix and match win states to create your own custom modes.

  • Teleport and Joystick Locomotion are also available for those who don't have a large playspace available.

  • PCVR has only been tested on Meta AirLink and might only work on Meta headsets. Currently the native Meta Quest edition looks and runs slightly cleaner than the PCVR edition.

  • Cross-play is available between Meta Quest and Steam, as well as between stationary and real-space players. (We are aware that most PCVR players do not have a fully-mobile setup.)

  • This PC edition can also function as a dedicated server and a spectator camera for those not currently playing. If the game starts without a headset connected, it will automatically enter server/spectator mode.

  • The game can be played completely offline via a local Wi-Fi network, or online through a direct connection to privately hosted servers.

While fully-playable as an arena shooter, we still have a lot planned. We are working on adding arenas, weapons, items, play styles, accessibility options, and quality-of-life features.
