What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Grabbus is, so far, being built by a team of two, with assistance commissioned from freelance creatives for original audio, translations, and other support. Overall, development has been relatively inexpensive and stable. However, with the support of Early Access, Grabbus may have more time and resources applied to it, such that it can be expanded with better, faster updates.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Early Access will persist for as long as the story-related elements are incomplete.
Many more features, characters, locations, buildings, and items will need to be added first.
Approximately 2 or more years of effort may be necessary for Grabbus to start approaching its true scope.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of Grabbus is planned to have, at minimum:
  • A tutorial and story conveyed via expressive portrait cut-scenes and a series of hand-made missions/locations
  • More enemies, characters, tower biomes, buildings, special activities, items, etc...
  • Further polished animation, procedural generation, and effects in key places.
  • Expanded building, exploration, and item management/synthesis features for the world map.
  • And plenty more! But we'll not promise or spoil too much yet...

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Grabbus is developed carefully, with plenty of well-functioning mechanisms, but few elements within them. This is to make sure that everything in the game plays nicely together before effort is put forth into injecting further variety.
As of this writing, Grabbus only contains a small slice of the full breadth of content planned. The player may climb the difficulty and power levels by beating randomized towers (of which there is only one biome so far), collecting their treasure, and buying evolution points to spend for permanent upgrades, but much of the world map's functions are incomplete. Most of the planned buildings are missing, with the current ones being mostly useful only for testing.
This stage of development is less about enjoying the game long-term, and more about helping to test it at a basic level until it can grow into what it's meant to be!”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Once enough basic content has been added to Grabbus to reach a point that we may begin adding story-related missions and scenes, the price will increase.
It will increase again after the main story missions are complete.
Further-off additions may be sold as themed expansion packs comprised of a collection of new features, characters, items, scenes, locations, and more!”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Feedback about anything that bugs you about the game, including bugs, is encouraged!
A close eye will be kept on the wants and needs of those who are generous enough to spend their time and money helping Grabbus become more fun!
News and communication will be conveyed over an official Discord server, Bluesky, and the Steam community.”

About This Game

Morris the rat, attached to a friendly parasite he names "Grabbus", awakes in a place called "Skixx" full of other rats, creatures, and otherworldly physics...

Grab, Throw, Build, Explore, Upgrade, Fuse, Shoot, and Loot in this surreal, high-energy adventure where breaking the limits and reaching further is encouraged!

Here are some key features already present in Grabbus:

Your Own Endless World: The turn-based world map is generated uniquely for each save file, and allows for exploring in all directions, as well as building useful structures. This is where one will find activities or locations to visit.

Grab and Battle in Random Towers: Grabbus contains a tile-based area generator that can produce a surprising variety of terrain shapes, while keeping the stage traversable, with treasure and enemies evenly placed. Explore these areas as Morris and Grabbus. Morris uses his legs to move, while Grabbus takes care of the rest! Grabbus can grab onto and pull at objects and enemies, as well as activate context-sensitive actions with them! Most importantly, Grabbus can use consumable items or siphon the potency of weapons to form energy bullets of varying patterns and traits. And of course, Grabbus can form a bubble shield around Morris to not only block damage, but reflect projectiles!

Upgrade Forever: The "Evolution Grid" gives players the ability to spend in-game currency on an ever-expanding matrix of 18 different upgrade nodes and tiles! The grid can be regenerated at the cost of a percentage of node points. However, those lost points are invested into upgrades to the evolution grid itself!

Fuse Loot and Weapons: Find helpful items of varying potency levels as you defeat enemies and clear tower floors! Grabbus can take two compatible items and mix them to get a more desirable result and save some inventory space. Experiment with all sorts of combinations!

Increasing Challenge and Rewards: As Morris and Grabbus clear tower floors, "world potency" slowly increases at a small, fixed amount. But, if Morris perishes, not only does he drop all held items, but the world potency decreases by a percentage. World potency determines the difficulty/reward level of any newly-generated towers that appear around your HQ. Towers of higher difficulty will have nastier enemies, but loot found there may drop with a higher maximum potency level!

Designed to Expand: Grabbus is carefully designed from the ground up to support a variety of expansions to its pool of items, NPCs, areas, and other features! If something new is added, it should be able to fit itself neatly into any phase of a play-through thanks to the borderless procedural world and power scaling.
