What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We want to be able to test out new maps with players and fans as they are added, once we have our base mechanics finished. This is an aspect we can keep improving for you each Fall and Spring semester, in connection with our game design program collaborators at West Virginia University.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We think two years should be enough time to give this a full experience. After that we can switch over to a full release, then add more maps as DLC.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We want to be able to select from 1-4 players. We want local versus working well, then start exploring AI substitutes for players, and networked players. We want to have a collection of varying difficulty maps. We would like to be able to have player character choice. Our current players are based on two model- Spark and Berry and you get what you get. We want to make sure game play is as tight as it can be with minimal intended glitches. ”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Our first run through at this launch will just be getting existing mechanics and what we have polished. Let's focus there first with comments? Right now, you can play with four players and controllers. You get whatever player you get when you load in. It is only local player versus. We have 6 maps. Most maps have dynamic elements that stun. The lamp mechanic works well in that it always targets whoever is closest, but we need to know whenever it gets stuck somewhere. Death works well. Most maps that happens because you had the light too long. An advanced map will have an additional reason. The maps are at varying difficulties, with you a UI that gives you some tips before loading into the map. The pick ups sometimes work, but sometimes do not work. Figuring out specifically when they do or do not work would be helpful. The sound effects sometimes do and do not work. Again, pinpointing that would be helpful. Despite its early access glitches, It's still pretty fun to play with more than one player. Get the others exploded first than have at it, if you have less than four players.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. We plan to gradually raise the price as we ship new content and features. Staying with us at the start keeps the price the lowest. We don't intend to ever go higher than $10 though. It depends on how long we are able to stick with this and improve it.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We want to know what's fun, what's working, and what we can do better. We want you to be active in our process as we continue to work on this project. Keep in mind this is made by volunteers and students, so it's going to be slow going ;) However, we hope it'll be worth it to you!”

About This Game

This a multiplayer couch versus game that embraces Appalachian Vibes and Cryptid Wonders in aesthetics and gameplay. It's bright, colorful, and inspires action. Your goal, as a mothman-esque creature (and perhaps other cryptids in the future) is to survive by not exploding. You do that by throwing a light at each other. Because, moths are attracted to light, but we've decided the reverse is also true in our world. The light artifact, left behind by some careless campers, always wants to seek cryptids out to uncover and destroy them. Poor lil fellas! They can never catch a break.

As the timer beneath your character ticks down while holding the light, so does the time you each have left in the round. If you hold the light for too long, you will explode and be out of the round. But you're a cryptid! A simple thing like exploding can't keep you down. You'll be back together again in time for the next round. Which of your friends can survive the map and stay away from the light the longest? You'll have to play to find out.

Our game maps feature several popular tourist attractions in the state, such as New River Gorge and Raven's Rock. Parts of each map will either hurt or help you in your goal. There are collectibles that appear that can also help you.

Our studio is student and community run. We're learning to be professionals, guided by a few mentors and friends from other studios with more experience. Please do keep all of that in mind as you play any of our games. Because of this our process works in parallel with a university schedule, so we'll minimally have updates to share with early access participants at the end of every semester. We may have more some semesters. We intend to polish the 6 maps we currently have, tighten game play, continue to make our UI more understandable, and bring in timed events if a level takes too long. We want to ensure levels are always 5 minutes or less. We are in a good a position to dream up new maps and fun mechanics as well as we continue to make this worth your time and ours. We'll be focusing on promoting real life areas in Appalachia with this game and its neat mythology.

As this is an early access game, we understand that our relationship with you is important and want to make sure you understand that (a) while we have a solid game loop and several maps this is absolutely not a finished game (b) this is made by volunteers and students of our non profit game studio in partnership with West Virginia University (c) it will take time with the constraints we have to make this game ready for full release. We can't make a promise on a full release date yet because of these areas. If you become part of our process early, we'll do our best to keep our price low, but we need to be able to support our mission of providing educational opportunities to our students and community members helping in the studio. As time progresses, this price will increase. Whatever you paid when you signed up is the price you always keep. We'll keep an eye on our community page for your feedback, our email, and we'll put out surveys after updates are pushed. Thank you for your help on getting this ready for publishing. We appreciate you just as we appreciate our community and student members that work tirelessly on these projects as they learn the fundamentals of game development and teamwork.
