What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“With Nippon Marathon 2: Daijoubu, we’re taking a giant leap forward. Every aspect of the game has been rebuilt from the ground up, featuring improved gameplay, greatly enhanced visuals, all new hand-crafted stages and painstakingly detailed characters. Early Access provides an opportunity for us to collaborate with you, our community. Your input via Discord and the Steam Community Forums will be key to making Nippon Marathon 2 the best it can be. We will also be introducing an online mode, which we intend to develop alongside your continued feedback.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We anticipate Nippon Marathon 2: Daijoubu’s Early Access period to last between twelve to sixteen months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“During the Early Access period, we plan to introduce a variety of exciting new content and features. We plan to add new contestants as development continues such as the brand-new character Mister BREAKFAST. Brand new marathons, unique outfits, expanded create-a-character options, a fully-fledged online mode, and the return of the fan-favourite turn-based party game L.O.B.S.T.E.R. MODE from the original Nippon Marathon along with brand-new party games are planned too.

A fully-fledged story mode campaign is planned featuring quests (such as helping an old lady get to the discount onigiri before it’s gone) and shiny collectible items. We’ll be sharing our development roadmap via the Steam Community Forums and our Discord too.

Usually the localisation for a videogame is one of the last things to be done once the game’s native text is fully complete. Seeing as we're launching in Early Access please excuse the use of machine translation. Machine translations will be mainly placeholder until the final release at which point we intend to include professional localisation. We've taken this approach so that we can include as many communities as possible in the Early Access period.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Four contestants will be available at Early Access launch, along with an early version of our new Create-A-Contestant feature. You can play locally with friends and CPU or via Remote Play Together. The game currently includes three marathon stages, each packed with unique and exciting hazards, traps, weapons, and Shiba inu. All content in the Early Access release is subject to change as we plan to use your feedback to improve as many aspects of the game as possible.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price may adjust during the Early Access period to reflect the content available and will increase upon the game’s full release to match the release-version’s value.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The feedback we receive via the Steam Community Forum and our Discord will help us find and fix bugs, balance gameplay, and inspire us to create the best game possible. During the development of the game’s online mode, user testing and feedback will be invaluable in ensuring it is both reliable and enjoyable for everyone.”

About This Game

Nippon Marathon 2: Daijoubu is a fast, physical, pick-up and play multiplayer experience where every stumble, dive, and melon toss can turn the tide. Whether you’re chasing victory or just trying to survive the next octopus attack, every race is unpredictable, hilarious, and unforgettable.

Built from the ground up with tighter controls, better graphics, and brand-new mechanics, NM2 delivers the perfect blend of skill, chaos, and couch rivalry.

Think you can handle Japan's most bizarre sporting event?

  • Sprint, dive, and dodge through unpredictable hazards

  • Use fruit weapons to sabotage and outplay rivals

  • Fall too far behind and get knocked out of the round

  • The last racer standing earns a star

  • Everyone respawns and a new round begins

Each round is a new opportunity for chaos and mayhem!

Every action contributes to your final score:

  • Stars

  • Finishing position

  • Popularity

  • Badges

When contestants cross the finish line the scores are tallied and the winner is declared.

Every item in Nippon Marathon 2 has multiple uses — offensive, defensive, tactical, or just plain ridiculous. Mastering them is the key to victory.

  • Melons – Heat‑seeking chaos. Blow up gas tanks, hazards, or unlucky spectators.

  • Bananas – Drop them with precision to ruin your rivals’ day.

  • Pineapples – Float over hazards or create brand‑new shortcuts.

  • Cucumbers – Spin‑attack to clear opponents and control the flow of play.

  • Mushrooms – Leave behind a smelly purple cloud that drains popularity.

  • Eating Items – Need a sneaky comeback? Eat your weapon for a speed boost.

More items are in development — the chaos will only grow.

  • 1–4 player competitive chaos (local & Remote Play Together)

  • Fruit‑based weapons with offensive, defensive, and tactical uses

  • Unpredictable hazards including deer, forklifts, carp, balloon men, and giant octopuses

  • Tighter controls & deeper physics rebuilt from scratch

  • Multiple routes & shortcuts in every stage

  • New stamina & stat systems for deeper strategy

  • Contestant Creator with trillions of combinations

  • Photo Mode to capture the madness

  • All‑new soundtrack, anime‑style effects, and the return of Sora the Troll’s unfiltered commentary.

Don’t worry, if your friends are too busy playing Generic Live-Service Shooter X you can play against our semi-intelligent bots, they don’t mind when you fling them into the sea!

Yolko Harbour

Forklifts, sailors, scissor lifts, and a giant octopus with a vendetta.

Shika Shika Deer Town

Bamboo forests, temple grounds, deer with attitude, and the high‑speed Bromance Car.

Let’s Go Ramen Museum

Mascots, broth vats, conveyor belts — and danger around every corner.

Every stage has its own unique atmosphere and hazards

  • Single Marathon Versus – The core Nippon experience

  • Cup Versus – Multiple stages back‑to‑back for game night

  • Tutorial - Learn the basics and practice falling over

  • More modes in coming during development

Build mascots, nightmares, idols, or weirdos with trillions of combinations. Save up to 20 across devices via Steam Cloud support.

We aim to make regular updates to the character creator so you can cosplay to your heat's content!

Stamina

Taking hits is exhausting and slows you down. Recover by staying safe or eating items.

Contestant Stats

Each character has subtle differences in Acceleration, Recovery, Acrobatics, and Stamina — perfect for players who want deeper mastery.

Popularity & Waving

Wave to the crowd to earn popularity points. These convert directly into score and carry over in Cup Mode.

Posing

Strike unique poses on the podium — or input secret commands to unlock special animations.

CPU vs CPU

Set each player to CPU, grab the popcorn, sit back and enjoy the bots battle it out.

Photo Mode

Pause the action, zoom in, frame the chaos, and share your most ridiculous moments.

Super Hazards

Face mini‑boss encounters like yokai crow‑people or the giant octopus. Survive or get wiped out.

Be prepared for the unexpected!

As development progresses we will be regularly releasing new updates. Our vision for the NM2  V1.0 full release to contain the following content:

  • Online ranked and casual multiplayer

  • 6 additional stages (9 in total)

  • 6 additional main characters (10 in total)

  • Party games (a minimum of 2)

  • A brand new take on Story Mode

  • Lots (and we mean lots) of custom character items

  • Collectible items and a full set of Steam Achievements

  • Localisation into more languages

By becoming an Early Access supporter you can help steer development by letting us know what matters most to you. See the Steam discussion forums for more detailed information on our roadmap!
