What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“TL;DR: We want to make the game the best it can be - by building it together with the community.

We believe traditional roguelikes are a perfect fit for Early Access, especially when developers actively engage with players. Our development thrives on frequent updates, with even more frequent BETA builds available to the community via the ChaosForge Discord.

Player feedback shapes our roadmap, features, and balance decisions. You can already see this approach in action by looking at the update history of Jupiter Hell! Like fine wine, roguelikes tend to age well - and we want to give this one time to ferment into something truly great.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We're aiming for a 1.0 release in August 2026, focused on expanding the game's breadth and refining every aspect to a high level of polish. The current version already offers a complete roguelike experience - Early Access allows us to grow it further, guided by community feedback.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Roguelike development tends to expand horizontally - rather than changing the core, we add more depth and variety. Expect more items, enemies, level generators, branches, traits, challenges, and new playable classes. At the same time, we'll continue refining and polishing the overall experience.

A rough roadmap of our plans is available on the Steam forums, and we're actively incorporating feedback from the community along the way.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is fully playable from start to finish, with all major systems in place. We're now focused on expanding its breadth - more items, enemies, systems, level generators, branches, special levels, challenges, and better modding support. We're also steadily improving polish, visual variety, and overall feel.

Want the bullet-point feature dump for the marketing folks? Sure, let's play that game :)
* 4 episodes, 6 branches, 9 special levels, and 2 boss fights
* Dozens of level generators, random events, and generation sets
* 3 classes, 15 master traits (sub-classes), and 24 regular traits
* 25 unique enemies and 100+ items, including exotics and uniques
* 30 assembly recipes for weapon and armor crafting
* 5 difficulty levels, 16 challenges, and dual-challenge support
* Hundreds of badges to earn ”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, we plan to slightly raise the price as we approach version 1.0 and the game reaches our target level of content and polish. Any price changes will be clearly communicated in advance, so players have plenty of time to jump in at the current price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Whether it's here on the Steam forums, on the ChaosForge/Jupiter Hell Discord, our official ChaosForge forums, or even on Reddit, X or BlueSky - we read all feedback! Players who've been part of our community over the past two decades know: we take feedback seriously, and many suggestions have directly shaped our games.

Roguelike development has always thrived on collaboration, and we're continuing that tradition - together with you!”

About This Game

The classic DRL is getting its commercial Steam release with updated gameplay and Jupiter Hell-based tileset!

After over 11 years in hiatus Chaos Forge resumes development on its original turn-based roguelike shooter, DRL. We're updating the game's mechanics and graphics and changing the setting to match the one featured in its acclaimed remake - Jupiter Hell - and bringing the game to Steam players, as a fully-featured commercial release, under the name Jupiter Hell Classic.

The original DRL remains free on the ChaosForge website and will continue to receive updates alongside the new Jupiter Hell Classic version. Jupiter Hell Classic will be your official way to own and play DRL on Steam, and support ChaosForge in continuing development of the entire series, now spanning over 20 years.

What to expect from Jupiter Hell Classic:

  • Classic, unforgiving, top-down, grid-based roguelike gameplay
  • 2D tile-based graphics
  • Diagonal movement
  • Steam Workshop support for all your nostalgia modding needs!

The demake of a remake of a roguelike unmake of a famous 1993 FPS shooter.

Read that again, let it sink in. The lore might be a bit confusing at first, but it all makes sense.

First, there was that legendary hell-shooter from the '90s. Then, in 2002, came a turn-based fan project that reimagined that chaos as a roguelike - fast, brutal, and built for coffee breaks. And players saw that it was good. For 14 glorious years, it brought turn-based carnage to a devoted fanbase.

Then, in 2016, came the un-making. The hell-hordes of lawyers descended on the game and all that was left was three lettersD R L. Was it still good, though? Hell yeah. And then, in 2019, came Jupiter Hell. The modern(ish) remake. Still with us? Remake of the unmake.

The year is 2024, and it's sure as hell time for the story to go full-circle with another demake. Jupiter Hell Classic, the demake of the remake of the unmake of the 2002 legendary roguelike that proved fast-paced action belongs in a turn-based RPG.
