Energy is King

MAXIMA: Keepers of the 2nd Law is a twist on your typical third-person shooter, putting more of an emphasis on tactical resource management by limiting the number of key resources to one, namely: energy.

Not only will you lose energy by receiving damage, but you'll also drain your own energy by charging up shots. However, the more energy you compress into your shot, the more powerful it will be, and depending on charge duration it will result in one of three types:

• Superheated (shotgun-like spread),
  
• Supernova (sniper-like hitscan), or
  
• Black Hole (akin to a grenade launcher).

Oh, and there is a fourth type, but early in your journey we wouldn't recommend attempting it due to its... "instability".

Replenish your energy pool by absorbing orbs of matter scattered throughout the levels.

The Chaos of Entropy

As combat rages on, the energy expended into the environment results in increasing entropy. Entropy affects the state of the arena, causing cover to rise and fall and fresh matter to emerge from the ground. Your enemies will attempt to use this against you, but it works both ways; harness the entropy yourself and use the ever-changing environment against your opponents.

Supernatural Bosses

Every Being in this Universe is formed up of dark matter particles, which can take any shape. Your first few encounters will involve facing humanoid-like bosses, but the closer you come to completing your journey, the more "unknown" and surreal they will become.

Each boss possesses a unique ability, posing a difficult challenge in asymmetric combat. Defeating the enemy will enable you to use their ability hence-forth, including in subsequent fights with echoes of the same boss, turning a once-lopsided battle into more of a balanced one, especially at the higher difficulties.

Keeping the 2nd Law

"The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that the entropy of an isolated system can only increase."

Your enemies—ex-Keepers—have abused their quantum entanglement points, trading energy between isolated systems; a violation of the 2nd law. As a new-generation Keeper, it's your mission to vanquish these lawbreakers and restore natural order.
