“Snappy sandbox with a high focus on exploration and discovery. The world changes often thanks to short and impactful seasons. Limited inventory and lifespan are an inducement for careful strategizing.”

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The game has a main flow already implemented and most bugs fixed, but there are things I would like to include before considering it finished; besides, early access is an extra opportunity for visibility and feedback to improve the final version of the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Ideally 6 months, but even if development extends, it won't be more than a year.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The final version will likely have a balance and improvement in the time passage system (events, seasons, lifespans, etc.), as well as in procedural generation.

Graphics and sounds will hardly change, but perhaps more animations, particles, interface tweaks, and overall effects will be added following the same retro-minimalist style.

A "classic" dungeon-style gameplay mode that shouldn't be too difficult to implement is being considered, as well as a small online section to share the world of a game; however, both inclusions will be confirmed as development progresses.

All of the above implies some extra content in terms of monsters, items, settlements, achievements, etc.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“All the main features are implemented so that the game can be enjoyed and completed (finishing a game and seeing the credits takes about 30-40 minutes). It's possible to create, load, and delete as many games as you want, and there's also an "encyclopedia" to make progress between games (completable in about 10 games).”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will not change throughout the entire early access period, but it's possible that it may increase slightly in the final version if the total content and feedback warrant it.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I'll be open to listening to feedback regarding the overall balance of the game, while also paying attention to any reported bugs. I'm also very interested in suggestions from those who play a lot regarding enemies, items, game pace, sandbox aspect, replayability, narrative, and late game.”

About This Game

WHAT IS DUNGEON WORLD?

A small "playground" where you can spend your time creating villages, killing some monsters, and preparing your character for the final day.

Inspired by games like Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup and Minecraft, Dungeon World combines simulation and minimalism in a classic dungeon-crawler where the dungeon is an entire world: with its changing biomes and emergent behaviors, but on a small scale and with simple interactions.

GAME CYCLE

Start in an unknown world that has its days numbered: get allies, find treasures, and prepare for the final day.

Planning your adventure is essential because you will age and lose most of your progress upon death; to grow stronger throughout your lives, you will have to learn about the world and modify it to your needs (heirs, seasons, shortcuts, settlements, etc).

Thanks to procedural generation, each world is unique, creating small emergent adventures for each player, such as:

  • Establish or defend settlements
  • Find objects or retrieve them from your past lives
  • Defeat hordes or major monsters
  • Gain allies to accompany you
  • Explore layers and unknown regions of the world

Nevertheless, the end will come, the world will be swept away, and it will be time to start over... or will you be able to save it?

FEATURES

Dungeon World revolves around minimalist gameplay, moving away from similar games based on combat or statistics, and instead focusing on simple interactions, inventory management, and planning given the lifespan of your character (and the world). Some highlights include:

  • A simulated world with interactions between NPCs
  • Turn-based and grid-based (movement, item usage, temporal cycles)
  • +40 monsters and items
  • +20 settlements and NPCs
  • Create and save as many worlds (games) as you want
  • Collection of creatures and stories
  • Cheats to use in the late game

STORY

"When the being that shaped the world abandoned these lands, they began to wither... but thanks to a wise person who foresaw the disaster, there is now a chance for the god to return and renew its creation."

The player controls an avatar that carries the essence of the creator and will have a limited time to learn about these lands and their myths, grow stronger throughout their lives, and ultimately confront the creator themselves if they wish to save this world.

The game does not focus on the story, but it does have "time" as its main theme in the form of messages and systems that the player must internalize to progress successfully in each game.
