What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Mind the Abyss is currently not a fully finished game, it is still being worked on. This game began as a senior thesis project at our university and we are now moving outside of student development and into full-time development.

Everything within the current build is meant for us to gather community feedback to find what players love and what people would like to see in the future.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We have the goal of fully releasing sometime in 2025, but due to the nature of early access development, we don’t have a specific release date planned at this time. We strive to create the best product possible for our players and want to have ample time to iterate and create the best game possible.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to expand the number of levels in our game and increase the length of playtime players can expect. We also intend to add more content in other areas too like more weapon variants, abilities, and enemies.

We would like to be able to expand the story elements of Mind the Abyss with things like voice lines. We also want to expand the game modes available in our game with a roguelike/endless mode (currently in development). Things could still change and players should be prepared for that, but those are our current plans at this point in early access.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version of Mind The Abyss will be the first level of the game, about 15-30 minutes in length, complete with 3 different weapon forms for players to blast enemies with. Currently there are 5 different enemy types to struggle against and 4 different movement mechanics at the players disposal to avoid enemy attacks. Be prepared to slide, wall run, dash, and grapple your way through the Abyss.

This initial version represents a "vertical slice" of Mind The Abyss so we wanted to give a lot of options and mechanics to play around with to give a taste of what Mind The Abyss is about.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, Mind the Abyss will be a paid game in its full access version. We plan on charging what we deem as a fair price for the game once we fully release it.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The Mind the Abyss community comments and suggestions will be heavily monitored through steam discussion boards, a community discord server, and through our other social media channels. We want to implement the thoughts and ideas of our community as they come and make a game for the players.”

About This Game

What is Mind the Abyss?

The pulse of an alien planet shifts the land itself, and the only ones who can put it back together are the scientists at the center and an underprepared Employee 465 who must use the planet’s hidden powers to survive. Uncover the mystery and plunge into the Abyss to harness the power that lies within.

Mind the Abyss is a fast-paced first-person movement shooter combining otherworldly abilities and ever-evolving weaponry within an alien planet. Taking inspiration from games like Titanfall and Ultrakill, players will unravel a deep-rooted mystery while blasting their way through the abyss.

Gameplay

As Employee 465, your life is at stake in an eldritch crystal cave system. There are only two options: run and shoot. The enemies are relentless, from the planet's native species to invasive scientists who failed to unlock its secrets. Evolution is crucial. Your alien weapon can transform into four forms: shotgun, rocket launcher, sniper rifle, and sub-machine gun, giving you the edge in this fight against planetary horrors.

Your fourth-dimensional grappling hook power allows you to perfect your physics-based movement in a complex environment. Use platforms to run across walls, propel yourself into the air, and slide around the map. Time is your greatest adversary as you race to solve the planet's mysteries and save your corrupted comrades before it's too late.

Story Summary

After years of traveling through space, a millennium ship sent by the Sol Fleet finally arrives at its alien destination, the planet Prometheus. After discovering that the planet has resources that behave in strange ways compared to typical Earth elements, the government sent an initial team to research the alien atmosphere before permanent human relocation.

Exploration was unstoppable. Once on the planet’s surface, scientists found incredible organisms—plants and fungi, as well as beautiful rock and crystalline structures deeper within the crust. The problem only began when they drilled too deep.

Steel against rock, the ground reverberated a pulse through the caverns, changing the very environments around the explorers—and their biology. Scientists morphed into odd creatures as their minds seemed to attune to the planet’s ecosystem. Other creatures came out of hiding to do the same. Meanwhile, Employee 465 lies just far enough away to feel the pulse, somehow resisting its effects.

Roaming the laboratory where they were awakened, they find an experimental weapon that would change everything. This weapon, made from rare elements within the lower layers of the Abyss, binds with Employee 465 to grant them the ability to reach into the fourth dimension.

This merging causes them to attune to their weapon and its new properties as they descend into newer, more uncanny facilities within the layers. Succumb to the corruption or rise to the challenge. Can you survive the Abyss?
