What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“As the sole developer of Lambda Enigma, I've spent over 2 years full-time working on my first game as a passion project. I've created all of the puzzles, artwork, 3D models, animations, shaders, music, sound effects, and the game's code. I feel at this point there's finally enough content to put Lambda Enigma up for sale. However, there's still a lot more gameplay and story that I plan to add. The reason why Early Access is great for Lambda Enigma is so that I can involve the community while I'm still developing its gameplay and storylines. I've been developing software professionally for over 25 years, but this is my first game, so I believe that community involvement will be the key to its success!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“It's impossible to say for sure, but at least another couple of years seems reasonable to me, to finally add all of my gameplay ideas and complete the story of the player's journey.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I plan to complete the story in the full version, answering questions about who the player is and why they are in the workshop. I also plan to add more navigational features so that the player can explore more areas of the workshop, such as the toolbox, the whiteboard and the lounge area, not just the workbench and the computer terminal. Eventually, I'd like for the player to have access to the cellar around the back of the workshop, where new types of puzzles await and the story ends.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Depending on how you look at it, there's currently between 4 to 6 unique types of puzzles available, with more than 50 individual puzzles to solve. There's a light-weight story in there too, but it will probably induce more questions than answers. You're welcome.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I have no plans to change the price after early access. I'm open to customer feedback though, which will help inform me about what the game is actually worth.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I'm considering doing live coding streams on Twitch or YouTube, where I'll fix bugs and add features to Lambda Enigma, if you have any interest in that sort of thing. I'm happy to take your feedback and suggestions to steer the direction of the game in my live streams. I think this would be a really fun way for players to get involved and to learn at the same time!

I'll definitely be active in the game's discussion page on Steam. So please be sure to leave feedback there!

I'm also planning to make an official public Discord server for the community to share ideas about the game and its ongoing development.”

About This Game

Welcome to Lambda Enigma!

You're about to enter a forgotten workshop, filled with unique and progressively difficult mechanical coding puzzles. This enigma requires intelligence, rather than dexterity, to solve puzzles using logic and deductive reasoning.

Features

  • Solve over 50 handcrafted puzzles in a beautifully haunting workshop.

  • Assemble 3D gears and laser deflectors into working machines.

  • Interact with an old mysterious computer and solve its puzzles, by actually writing code!

    • Prior coding experience is not required, but it definitely helps.

  • Follow the computer's story and help solve the Lambda Enigma.

Story

You are outside of a seemingly abandoned workshop. Upon entering, you arrive at a workbench in front of 3 metal boxes, which are connected to tubes leading down to somewhere...

The boxes appear to require lambda power, which you'll supply by solving strange mechanical puzzles that are ejected from the boxes. It looks like the system is running out of juice though, because the well dries up rather quickly and 2 of the boxes remain locked.

So, you investigate a nearby computer terminal, where some old software has you solve text puzzles to spin up actuators and charge a laser. Wait, what?!

"What is this place? How did I get here? Why am I solving all of these weird puzzles?"

Don't ask too many questions, please. The system is running out of lambda power...

And it needs your help!

Installation

Lambda Enigma runs on .NET 8 and requires an AV1 codec (DirectShow filter) to play videos.

When you launch the game through Steam for the first time, Lambda Enigma downloads and installs these two Microsoft packages for you automatically using the winget tool:

  • .NET Desktop Runtime 8.*

  • AV1 Video Extension

The install script is located at [SteamLibrary]\steamapps\common\LambdaEnigma\Install\

Alternatively, you can install both packages manually if you:

  • have no Internet connection when launching Lambda Enigma for the first time

  • do not have the default installation of winget on Windows 10/11, for any reason

  • are not signed into your Microsoft account when launching Lambda Enigma for the first time

Look in the Discussions tab for links to manually download and install, if necessary.

Troubleshooting

Lambda Enigma is failing to launch

First, make sure that you have installed the two free packages listed above. There are a number of reasons why Lambda Enigma's installation script may fail, but you don't have to depend on it anyway. Look in the Discussions tab for links to manually download and install both packages.

Second, try restarting your computer.

Third, try installing any pending Windows updates and make sure to update your drivers. You may have to restart your computer again after the updates.

Lastly, look at Lambda Enigma's log file for a hint. There's usually a detailed error message near the bottom.

Check the Discussions tab in Steam for further troubleshooting and support information.
