About This Game

The Story of the Lost Dot

The Story of the Lost Dot is a unique, simple, and fun casual game in which you play as a small dot. You have fallen from your place after the words 'THE END' in the novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. You will experience the classic tale in a whole new way as you literally dive into the text of the novel and begin a story of your own. You will go deeper and deeper inside the novel, trying to find your way, avoiding traps and enemies. You will need to find your way back to the end where you belong to make the story complete again.

Game Features

  • Immerse yourself in the mystery as the last dot of the 1865 novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

  • Dodge Enemies and Avoid Traps

  • Solve Puzzles

  • Rewind Time

The Story Within the Story

As a father of two little daughters, I spend countless evenings reading children's books aloud. One night, while reading Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, something magical happened. In my mind's eye, I saw a single dot falling through the letters on the page – a tiny punctuation mark tumbling through the words.

That moment of inspiration became the seed for The Story of the Lost Dot. I knew right away that I needed to make a game of this vision I had. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, written in 1865, belongs to the public domain, which allowed me to build my game around this classic tale.

From Vision to Reality

I wanted to create something unique – a gaming experience where you could experience what it would feel like to dive inside a novel as a small dot. As you navigate through the game, you'll encounter the original text in small, digestible sections, potentially opening up a whole new world for those who don't often pick up books.

Aesthetic and Atmosphere

The game's visual style pays homage to the early days of computing, when monitors displayed only black and white pixels. This minimalist aesthetic creates a timeless feel that bridges the gap between Carroll's Victorian era and our digital age. When I paired these simple graphics with melancholic music during development, the story's emotional core crystallized.

Gameplay Innovation

This being my first Steam release, I invested considerable time perfecting the mechanics. The game features a unique scoring system based on the actual letter frequency in Carroll's original text. Touch rare letters for higher points, while common letters offer smaller rewards.

To ensure players never get stuck (for example, falling inside a letter like 'U' with no way out), I've included a time-rewind mechanic. This feature evolved into something more significant during development, leading to the addition of puzzles and meta-levels between chapters that add more depth to the core experience.

A Competitive Edge

The Story of the Lost Dot also includes leaderboards for those who enjoy competition. My friend Markus Petäjä helped me with this by creating a custom database design for the game. Challenge other players to see who can best navigate through Wonderland while collecting the points you get from the letters of this beloved story.

"THE END" was the last word in
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
that Lewis Carroll wrote.

And you were the last dot.
That dot after "THE END".
The last dot that every story has.

Then something strange happened.
Now you need to find your way back.
And make the story complete again.
