What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“As a solo developer working on Scroll Scramble around a regular job, testing and feedback are one of the trickiest parts of the development process. By having a brief Early Access period, I can use the feedback from you wonderful people to ensure the final game is as good as I can make it.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The Early Access phase for Scroll Scramble is not expected to be long. I hope to leave Early Access by the end of April 2023.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I plan to add more levels and level entities (things that can kill you).”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version is almost complete in terms of gameplay. There are currently 10 "scrolls" (levels) to play through, a full menu system with basic settings, and a complete game loop.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will not change coming out of Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“In addition to welcoming feedback from Early Access players, there is also a strong community on Discord where the game can be discussed, as well as a Twitch channel where I work on development of the game live.”

About This Game

Please Note: The game is still being developed, and there may be some inconsistencies in the screenshots/videos due to them being from older builds. Particularly in the artwork, which is the main thing being worked on right now. New screenshots will go up closer to release.

Scroll Scramble is a maze puzzle game about a hapless student wizard who just can't get the spells to stay in his head. In a last-ditch effort to learn the magic, our inept hero must travel into the magical scrolls and seek the knowledge in a... more hands-on fashion. You take control of Ian as he navigates the magical scrolls. Each spell is made up of a series of runes, and you must find them all before you can progress to the next spell. It's not just a matter of looking, however. Magic can be dangerous, and those dangers are manifest down here in the scrolls.

  • 24 spells to find, each with a different maze to navigate and different puzzles to unravel
  • An original chiptune soundtrack
  • Collectables provide a little extra challenge for those who want it
  • Controller support
  • 2.5D art style; control 2D sprites in a 3D world
  • Steam achievements

All game entities--including the player--are confined to a grid-based movement system, with wrinkles in the scroll parchment being impassible to all. The scrolls are full of a purple mist that represents the player's ignorance. The mist can hold other entities in place, but the player can remove it simply by walking through it. Once the mist has been removed, any entities it might have been confining can get out, so be careful what you set free!
