About This Game

STORY

New Year’s Eve, 1997 – Lani, Collin, and Tiho are doing what they do every year: popping that mysterious, unlabeled game cartridge into the console and ringing in the new year with their own weird little tradition. But this time, something goes wrong – a pin on their beloved cartridge snaps off, and suddenly a strange portal opens up…

The three friends find themselves in a bizarre fantasy world filled with quirky characters and twisted locations. Some of it feels just like the game they’ve always played on New Year’s Eve. Some of it feels like it came from a distant subconscious. And some of it feels… a little too familiar.

Separated from one another, they stumble through strange places, click through tricky puzzles, experience wild adventures – and try to find their way back to each other and escape this weird fantasy world. How did they even end up here? And what exactly do friendship, nostalgia — and the broken game cartridge — have to do with it?

ABOUT THE DEV AND THE PROJECT

Hi! I’m Chris – adventure game lover and solo indie dev behind A Pretty Broken Adventure and Cleo – a pirate's tale.

What truly drives me is a deep love for humor, heartwarming stories, and that nostalgic adventure game vibe I vividly remember from my childhood – and plan to hold on to for the rest of my life.

A Pretty Broken Adventure is a solo-developed, hand-drawn point-and-click adventure. After my debut game Cleo – a pirate’s tale was so warmly received by the adventure game community – earning an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam and nominations for “Best Debut” at the Deutscher Computerspielpreis and “Best Story” at the Deutscher Entwicklerpreis – I knew I wanted to make another big adventure. Even more ambitious – and with just as much energy, passion, and heart.

The development of my new game started in early 2023 in Unity. At the end of the year, I took the leap and switched engines to continue the development in Unreal.

Just like with Cleo, storytelling is at the heart of this project. I want to tell a charming, funny story that also has its serious, deep, and emotional moments. A game that sparks nostalgia but still manages to surprise. A classic point-and-click with a modern twist. No pixel hunting, no moon logic – just plenty of heart, humor, and tons of 90s vibes.

A Pretty Broken Adventure is a passion project in the purest sense – no publisher, no funding (yet), just me, a lot of heart, and a bit too much caffeine.

Let’s make pointing and clicking magical again!
