About This Game

"In the shadowed halls of the Pharaoh's tomb, the oblong board of the game of Senet lay before me like a sinister portal to the underworld. The intricate symbols etched upon the board seemed to writhe and twist in the flickering torchlight, whispering secrets of a long-forgotten era, intoned by the dancing flames. As I lifted the game pieces and moved them across the board, a sense of dread crept over me, as if the very gods of ancient Egypt were solemnly watching and judging my every move with an inquisitive eye. And yet, I could not resist the lugubrious call of the game, and the unbearable attraction of its ancient mysteries drawing me deeper into the darkness with each passing turn, for daring to profane this sacred tomb."

  • This version of Senet is using the well-known Kendall's rules, which allow you to make combinations of moves.
  • The board consists of thirty squares (called houses) arranged in three rows of ten. You have seven pawns, which can be reduced to five in a custom game.

  • Your aim is to ascend all of your pawns from the board before your opponent and access Sekhet-Aaru, the kingdom of Osiris, known as the Field of Reeds.
  • Before starting the game, players place their set of cone-shaped and spool-shaped pawns on the board alternately. In a standard game, the cone-shaped pawns belong to the player one (P1) and are placed in the even-numbered houses, while the spool-shaped pawns belong to the player two (P2) and are placed in the odd-numbered houses. In this particular version of Senet, you will have the freedom to choose.
  • To move a pawn, four throwsticks or two knucklebones act as dice. If you roll a 1, 4, or 5, you get an extra throw. Each throw allows you to move a pawn by that value, so a turn can consist of several moves in any order. Starting from version 1.10, you have the option to skip that rule and move a pawn after each throw directly.

  • Only one pawn can stand in a house. You can only move a pawn to a vacant house if the opponent pawn on that house is undefended. If a pawn occupies a house in front of or behind another same kind of pawn, then both pawns are defended.
  • Moving a pawn targeting an opponent undefended pawn will result of both pawns switching places, unless the targeted House is beyond the House of Beauty, then the opponent pawn is sent back to the House of Water.
  • Watch out for blockade and houses that send you tumbling back down the board!

  • The House of Beauty, the 26th House, is a mandatory square. Each pawn has to stop there every time, and you can't jump over that House.
  • The House of Water, the 27th House, acts like a pitfall. You will mostly want to avoid moving a pawn here, but sometimes you won't have a choice. If your pawn is on 27, your other pawns can't move, and those pawns are no longer defended. You can pass your turn and wait for a dice result of 4 to exit that pawn from the board from 27 (select that pawn, cancel the move, and then select the pawn again to pass your turn). You can choose to move that pawn to The House of Repeating Life or any free House before it, if currently occupied by a Pawn. Doing so ends your turn, regardless of the Dice values.
  • The House of Three Judges, the House of Two Judges, and the House of Horus, the 28th, 29th, and 30th Houses, have the same rule. From those Houses, you have to roll the right Dice Value to Exit the Board, so 3, 2, or 1.

  • Senet was created as a way to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of Tutankhamun's Tomb on November 4, 1922. His tomb contained no fewer than four Senet boards. The boy king's treasures spurred renewed interest in Ancient Egypt, and after a century, it is still one of the most famous discoveries in modern archaeology.
