About This Game

There once was a chimpanzee-level AI that killed its creators by releasing a nerve agent right after being turned on. This is not that story. This is the story of SciPhi, a contractor hired to prevent this from happening again by developing a morality module for that AI.

About

Elementary Trolleyology is a game about your first (and only) day working at SciPhi, the world's leader in ethical alignment. You work on a secretive project for a large client developing a morality module for an advanced AI that recently disposed of a team of scientists when turned on. Your exact role for the project remains unclear as you step into the facilities of SciPhi, but what is clear is this: every decision you will make means the difference between life and death for others.

Key Features

  • Discover the story behind the development of the morality module in this epic tale of hubris and heroism.
  • Combining RPG elements with puzzles and interactive novel parts to capture a unique problem in game form: what makes an action good?
  • Your views about good & bad will be taken apart, decision by decision.
  • Make your way through SciPhi, a company that is willing to do anything & everything necessary to solve the hardest problems in ethics.
  • Your decisions matter: they determine your path through this moral maze.
  • Supports interactions with the audience: Open your game so that others can vote on key decisions.
  • Let's crowd-solve ethics. A trolley problem editor is provided that allows everybody to create, share, comment, and solve trolley problems and explain their thinking.

Create Your Character

Consistency is key in making it through Elementary Trolleyology: certain combinations of decisions create problems for you that you have to solve. To be up to the task you will need to create a cognitive character that is a match for those problems. Only some cognitive character traits will give you the ideas you need to solve the problems resulting from your decisions. So consistency between your choices and your character are key!

Let's Solve Ethics

Elementary Trolleyology is a game, but it is also an attempt at getting as many people as possible working on solving ethics. It provides players with tools to comment on every aspect of the game by dropping messages in the world. It also comes with a trolley-editor that allows players to create ethical problems, share them with others, and comment on their preferred solution. Will you provide the necessary insight to solve some of the hardest ethical problems known to humanity?

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

This game contains many scenes where cartoon characters are run over by trollies. The depiction of the events is visceral but cencored by a blurred widget.
