What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The core of Barbaria is an asynchronous multiplayer experience. Our goal is to create a competitive multiplayer challenge where you are both attacking other players and defending your realm. As such, we anticipate a lot of balancing and adjustments to take place once more players begin playing the game. We think iterating in Early Access while getting feedback directly from players will be the best way to achieve a fun and balanced multiplayer experience for Barbaria.

We take pride in our combat mechanics and playability with our current character roster. We plan to expand the arsenal of champions and minions during this period while giving them each unique behaviors in order to increase the strategic possibilities.

Some of our goals during this Early Access period include:
  • Adding new tiles/structures to create more challenging/strategic play
  • Expand available champions and minions
  • Expand available weapons
  • Add more realm customization options
  • Update character/item behaviors and stats to create balanced and competitive gameplay

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We anticipate our Early Access period will last approximately 1 year.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version of Barbaria contains the full multiplayer game loop we intend. Players can build their realm, attack other players’ realms, collect new items and upgrade existing items to improve future attack and defensive capabilities. For the final version we plan to expand the content options available. Players can expect more weapons, characters, structures, and tiles along with a more balanced and polished game-play experience in the final version.

As we get more players into the game and get more feedback, we anticipate new features that we haven’t considered will come to light. We hope to incorporate as many of these new ideas into the full version game as we can.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The initial Early Access version of Barbaria 0.9.3 contains:
  • 1st person systemic combat including a variety of weapons and enemy/minion types.
  • NPC allies defend your base or come along with you on raids to attack other players.
  • Asynchronous Multiplayer: Once you build a realm, it is always available online for others to attack/raid. Attack notifications are delivered each time you launch the game, and you can watch replays to gain insights on how to improve your defenses or attack strategy.
  • New Player Experience Tutorial levels introduce various gameplay mechanics before unlocking multiplayer.
  • After beating a set number of multiplayer levels, players gradually unlock:
    • Upgrade Station
    • Store
    • Customization Station
    • Replay Station
    • Challenges of the Ancient Ones

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We have yet to set final pricing for the full version of Barbaria, but it is safe to say that it will likely increase in price relative to the current Early Access product.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to do regular updates of Barbaria throughout the Early Access period. These updates will be a mix of new features, bug fixes, and balance updates based on user feedback. We look forward to hearing what the community is interested in, and anticipate feature decisions and changes will be heavily influenced by player feedback. Please check out our Discord Channel https://discord.gg/ZyGzJRQURm to let us know what you’d like to see next in Barbaria!”

About This Game

Barbaria is a VR combat/builder mashup. Attack other players, build defenses, and equip your team as you compete to be the Mightiest in Barbaria!

Build, Battle, Collect

Use your fists, axes, swords, bows, rocks, or anything else you can find for intense 1st person combat action. Toss enemies to allies to be dispatched, catch rocks flying toward your head, ignite an arrow before firing it at an enemy, or launch opponents into the air with traps. Then jump out to your immortal form and watch your minions carry on the battle while you rain down meteors from above. Systemic combat, enemy AI, and player-created defenses make every battle unique.

Asynchronous Multiplayer

But remember, you aren’t the only Semigod in Barbaria! Attack other player-created realms to increase your Mightiness, and receive rewards when your team successfully repels others. Watch replays in miniature from your Stronghold, then strategically place structures, champions, and minions to keep future attackers at bay.

Features

  • Systemic 1st Person VR Combat including a variety of weapons and enemy/minion types.
  • Base building: Snap together tile fragments to build your realm, then place structures and minions to defend it from other players.
  • Asynchronous Multiplayer: Once you build a realm, it is always available online for others to attack/raid. Attack notifications are delivered each time you launch the game.
  • Replay: Watch replays of attacks on your realm by other players to gain insights on how to improve your defenses or attack strategy.
