What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Simply put, our tiny team has been working on this game for quite some time and we want people to see it! It’s reached a point where we personally love the game and are looking for some community feedback and suggestions. There's still a lot of content to add, but developing and testing in a vacuum can only get you so far.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Every update gets us closer to being out of Early Access. Currently all of the main mechanics are in the game. That being said, we understand that there may be suggestions and feedback that may impact the development roadmap. Our goal is to make a quality game and we will continue to work towards making the best game possible.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“If I had it my way, I’d flood this section with plans, but that would be unrealistic. Things that are currently on the roadmap are; more allies, enemies (including mini and main bosses), resources and items. We also plan to flesh out the story and dialogue between the NPCs. It is also planned to have multiple possible endings to the game, depending on the player’s choices.
Finally, a personal wish of mine is to really flesh out the automation system in the game. This last one will likely go through many iterations, but it’s something that I personally enjoy, so I’ll be selfish and pour a lot of hours into making it polished.
There are many more things in the pipeline, but I’m leaving plenty of room for suggestions from the community.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“As it stands, the current version of Expansion Core is rough around the edges. The building, crafting, and gathering are all solid and will likely not change much. Combat is simple and effective, but there are plans to improve the general feel of it. The ally FPS/RTS controls are functional, but will likely go through some reworks based on community feedback. Finally, the biggest thing that needs work is the world layout. There are resources and enemies scattered through the Forest and Scorched biomes, but hardly any unique locations to visit.
Overall, the gameplay elements are there and I’m confident that the core loop is fun. That being said, there is a lack of exploration content as I’ve been focusing mainly on the gameplay in these early stages. As the mechanics are locked down and need less bug fixes, I will be able to move onto more of the content generation side of making the game.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to slowly increase the price the closer we get to 1.0 because of the new content and features that are planned for implementation.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to take feedback and suggestions very seriously. Due to our tiny team size, we plan on filtering the suggestions and putting up occasional polls for the community to vote on. We currently have a private Discord that we may eventually open up to the public. That being said, any suggestion that I feel fits the overall vision of the game will be added.”

About This Game

Expansion Core is a survival game that focuses on building a group of allies that function as a mobile base. There is a heavy emphasis on inventory management and a constant need to keep moving. Use the unique upgrade system to upgrade both yourself and your allies.

Gameplay
Gather, explore and fight to gain resources. Find relics of both the past and a possible future. Realize that you’ve ran out of inventory space and find a better way to travel.

Allies and Combat
Build multiple tiers of allied bots to help you along in your journey. Activate Beacons and defend against waves of enemies. Spawn massive structures and communicate with the remains of humanity.

HUBs and Research
Use the new found HUB to trade for currency and use it to research new bot types. Each HUB also provides a Core, essentially an artificial brain. Any ally with a Core can be upgraded through the same means as the player.

Upgrades and Progression
Fight a variety of enemies and find relics of the past and use them to upgrade both your allies, and yourself. Go throughout the land and piece together the story of a broken world.
