What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Edge of War's journey began in spring 2020 with a passionate, small team that has since grown to 15 dedicated members. By 2022, we were elated to secure a publishing deal for a 2024 release. Yet, the tides turned unexpectedly in 2023, when our agreement was cut short due to unforeseen circumstances within the publisher's domain.

Faced with these challenges, our path shifted. While full-time development became untenable, our commitment to Edge of War remained unwavering. A few of us, fueled by passion and a shared vision, have chosen to champion this game during our personal hours, aspiring to realize its full potential.

The road to Early Access was steep, driven by our determination not to let the game fade into obscurity. Now, more than ever, the feedback and camaraderie of our community are paramount. We're unveiling Edge of War to you not just as a game, but as a shared journey. Together, in the fragments of our free time, let's shape its destiny.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Edge of War will be in Early Access for a while and we are expecting the full release to happen by the end of 2025. We will keep updating the game and its content as much as we can during this period. The reception and popularity of the game will affect the progress of development timeline.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The heart of Edge of War lies in its emergent storytelling—a dynamic canvas where players craft their individual tales within our expansive world. But like any great tale, our game has its chapters yet to be written.

Upon our unforeseen pivot from traditional publishing, we solidified the game's foundational mechanics: thrilling combat and adventurous explorations. Yet, the depth of our world-building and narrative intricacies are still blossoming.

Imagine Edge of War as a sumptuous feast. We've prepared the appetizers and set the table, but the main course—our rich narrative experience—is still simmering.

Beyond story, other game elements await refinement and introduction. Elements like strategic traps, nuanced character personalities, and a vibrant world that cycles through seasons, affecting visuals and gameplay mechanics. While our Early Access version offers a glimpse into one season, the complete journey spans an entire in-game year. And while characters can currently progress to level 7, the envisioned cap stretches between levels 20 to 30.

We acknowledge that certain features, including polish, tutorials, and user-interface enhancements, might not yet meet player expectations. This translates into a steeper learning curve, with some in-game knowledge possibly requiring external sources.

While our vision for Edge of War is grand, we understand it's currently a work in progress. As you consider joining us in Early Access, recognize both the potential and the present state of the game. While it's an exciting opportunity to co-create, experience, and shape the narrative, it's essential to approach with a clear understanding of the game's current limitations. We cherish our community, and we'd rather you embark on this journey with us fully informed than risk any misplaced expectations. Your decision now will play a vital role in the legacy of Edge of War.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Currently, Edge of War is playable, though we recognize that there's plenty more to smooth out and expand upon. Here's an honest look at what's already in place:

  • Combat & Exploration: We've laid down the foundation for combat and exploration, allowing for both tactical battles and intriguing wanderings.
  • Interactive Environment: The game already boasts dynamic, physics-based environments. Elemental interactions (like water, fire, oil, and electricity) are present, providing strategic depth.
  • Locations: There are over 20 unique spots for adventuring and an additional 20+ encounter locations. Each of these has been designed to vary in subsequent playthroughs.
  • Quests: Currently, there are 6+ quests available for players.
  • Character Races: Players can choose from three races: humans, peycko, and hirwio.
  • Skills: At this stage, there are 20+ player skills available for character customization.
  • Time Mechanics: The game features a daytime variation, impacting certain gameplay elements.
  • Trade & Loot: Merchants are around for trading, and there's no shortage of loot—be it in containers or dropped by adversaries.
  • World Design: A semi-procedural approach to world generation has been implemented, encouraging multiple playthroughs.

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. The price will increase incrementally during the Early Access period, with a final launch price that has yet to be decided.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will utilise the Steam Forums and our Discord community.”

About This Game

Edge of War delivers an isometric CRPG experience where your choices carve a unique path through the Northlands inspired by laplands and Finnish Folklore. Engage in intricate grid-based combat, leveraging a deeply interactive environment to outmaneuver foes.

In this world, every quest holds weight and significance, directly influencing your journey and the others around you. With semi-procedural world creation and emergent storytelling, each playthrough offers a distinct narrative and plenty of variety.

Venture forth, but remember: mastering the environment is as crucial as mastering the blade.

Engage in Tough & Tactical Combat

Trials and tribulations await those who seek redemption in the Northlands. Assemble your squad and scout the wilds beyond Fort Turso. This tough turn-based CRPG will pit you against the dangers and the darkness that inhabit the North. Test your wit, wiles and will in a world inspired by Finnish Folklore and the Kalevala!

A New Story Every Playthrough

Procedurally-deployed hand-crafted quests along with reactive environments lead to a level emergent gameplay unlike any other, and ensures every playthrough is different. Your decisions affect the fate of the Northlands. Choose your squad, choose your skills, choose your allies.

Make friends or enemies of the locals. Delve in dungeons and discover ancient artefacts. Fight tooth, nail and claw against the mighty beast of the wilds. Commune with the spirits and abide by their ways when traversing their realms. Or tackle indomitable constructs and collect their weird technology.

Each element is taken into account and will shape not just your characters but the Northlands. The smallest decision can rally a faction to come to your aid, or seek your destruction. So be careful where you swing that blade, toss that fireball, or lay a kind word. How you live will determine how you die in Edge of War.

Explore Finnish Folklore

Your squad is tasked with exploring a region that has seen the corruption of a Compelled God, bears the scars of a warlord, and is marked by histories and peoples long forgotten. And yet, somehow people still eek out an existence amidst all these dangers. The Free Folk and the Barbarian Tribes call it home, as do the many spirits - all of them just waiting for a reason to kill you.

Vaeki infuses every stone, every tree, every stream. It gives rise to life, it is present in death, and it is a gift of the gods. Ukko reigns above, Tuoni below. Their brethren are scattered. Yet all ignore you and your prayers. Such is the way of the North.

Fort Turso is your home, your hub for adventures. From here you can journey to the borders of Pohjola or seek the river to Tuonela. Perhaps you will follow in the footsteps of Tapio or heap praise and prayers upon a shrine to Vetehain. Wherever you go Hiisi and other horrors are never far away.
