The Essence of Wuxia, Part I: Every Move Counts

For me, the most fascinating part of wuxia is the individual moves found in martial arts manuals. In Jin Yong's The Legend of the Condor Heroes, Guo Jing relies on "Kang Long You Hui" for much of the story, honing a single move to its peak. Perhaps that was when the back-and-forth exchange of techniques became one of the defining joys of wuxia for me. That lasting impression lies at the heart of Xia Bu Yi: martial arts moves become cards, with strikes, feints, variations, qi attacks, mental arts, footwork, and more coming together in tactical duels.

These clashes have real consequences. When an opponent prepares a feint, you can interrupt it with a strike. When they take a defensive stance, a feint can break their guard. Once you break their move, they are at your mercy.

Beyond the classic interplay of strikes, feints, and guards, the game also features mental arts, variations, concealed weapons, qi attacks, signature moves, and master techniques. After all, the world of wuxia is far richer than a simple game of rock-paper-scissors.

The Essence of Wuxia, Part II: Martial Heroes

Wuxia stories are filled with people shaped by hardship. At their heart, these tales are about ordinary people standing up for what is right. Our story begins with two companions brought together by chance: one seeks the truth behind his father's involvement in a military mutiny years ago; the other is a passionate young man taking his first steps into the martial world, determined never to back down when loyalty and friendship are at stake.

But this is only the beginning. As your journey unfolds, you will meet more martial heroes, each bringing new stories and abilities to your quest.

Every hero has unique signature moves and master techniques. If a hero leaves your party, their signature move and master technique cards leave with them.

The Essence of Wuxia, Part III: Manuals and Annotations

In wuxia, martial arts manuals are passed down through generations, while personal insights are shared by word of mouth. What matters most is making a technique your own: understanding it deeply and shaping it into something that reflects your individual style.

We have designed three layers of build customization. The first is your deck of technique cards, the foundation of every move you make. The second is your party of heroes: different companions give your team a different underlying fighting style. The third is the annotation system, with up to 30 annotation effects available for each technique.

Choose the enhancements you believe best complement each move. A well-chosen annotation can be the finishing touch that makes a technique shine; a poor choice can leave it merely ordinary.

The Essence of Wuxia, Part IV: Legendary Arms

Legendary weapons and keen blades take the form of equipment in the game. Instead of the treasures and relics commonly found in roguelikes, we use weapons and gear that your heroes can equip as key pieces of your build.

Heroes can equip gear according to their carrying capacity. A higher capacity lets them carry more items and stronger equipment. This weight limit creates meaningful trade-offs between passive effects, encouraging a distinctive build for each hero instead of simply stacking as many bonuses as possible.

You wouldn't want a seasoned martial master and a young novice to end up with exactly the same passive effects, would you?

Here's a key difference: you can bring equipment out of a run! Once acquired, it becomes a lasting part of your build.

You can also choose some of that equipment to take with you at the start of your next run.

A Few More Details

The game includes a simple crafting system, mainly for brewing wine.

The overall structure combines a single-player card game with looting, combat, and extraction. Between runs, your home base lets you manage equipment and combine items.

You don't have to challenge the final boss every time. If your build isn't coming together, you can extract early and return for another attempt.

Bring a sensible supply of wine to replenish lost health with ease.

As for the rest of the tricks and tactics, you'll have to discover them for yourself!
