What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We have a beta with two and a half hours of gameplay. We want to do Early Access to (a) get feedback on the development —we want to continue moving towards a sort of tactical espionage mode, (b) as a complementary strategy to make publicity noise, and (c) build a community around feedback and developments. For this you will be able to interact directly with the Project Manager and other members of the community through our Discord server.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“About a year.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“(a) The idea is to make a saga of 3 video games, and right now we have approx. 1/3 of the 1st game, so we have to do more scenarios and continue building the story.
We also want to:
(b) strengthen the combat system,
(c) improve the exploration features,
(d) expand the stealth system,
(e) include a 'Bestiary' system,
(f) develop a hazard map system,
(g) expand the translation to 8 languages and, finally,
(h) include a 2-player co-op feature, so friends have fun and learn together, parents can play in couples with their children and see what they are learning and how, strengthen their bond, and have fun together.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The video game is a 3D third-person action/adventure (for PC initially) and has a bit of a chibi-style. It gives players a feeling of fun at first glance. Friends and enemies, level challenges, sounds, structures and objects are designed for players to explore, be surprised, fight, and make decisions that test their understanding of what may be happening.

At this point the game has two completed levels with a good story that, at the end of two and a half hours of gameplay, allows players to get an idea of how we are going to approach the subject of the games. However, it is a unique story because in a creative and innovative way it unites a wide variety of different scientific studies that have been developed in the last 100 years. And according to a study I published, the game serves a valuable function for society.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. The idea is to give a better price to people who decide to support us now. We plan to gradually raise the price as we ship new content and features, but also because if people find out about the game a bit late, they don't feel like they lost the opportunity to get the game at a good price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will have an official Discord server with at least four channels: two text channels, and two voice channels. The first text channel will be for development suggestions, and the second will be for reporting bugs. On the other hand, the first voice channel will be so that Community members can talk to each other, and the second will be to meet directly with the Project Manager. This will be scheduled once a week, but each week the meeting time will be different to speak with people mainly from America, Europe, Asia and Africa.”

About This Game

Inspiration & theme:
Children are already abusing drugs at age 12 or 13 (...), including tobacco, alcohol, inhalants, marijuana, prescription drugs such as sleeping pills & anti-anxiety medicines” (National Institute on Drug Abuse -NIDA-, 2020), and youngsters underestimate the dangers (United Nations’ World Drug Report, 2021). Drug abuse in young people is a nightmare that affects families and communities worldwide. So, what can be done? NIDA (2020) states that “increased understanding of the basics of addiction will empower people to make informed choices in their own lives”. But if science took +100 years to unravel how drugs change the brain and produce addiction, can regular children and adults learn such complex topics to foresee the hidden dangers of trying drugs? Can this be done in a fun and simple way, so that even children/young people can (and want!) to learn them?

'You VS Drugs' is the world's first brain-based adventure saga that takes place inside our brain. Through story arcs that happen to brain Agents, cinematic cutscenes and surprising storylines, 'You VS Drugs' entertains young people while educating them about the brain bases of addiction, and how different drugs affect different parts of your brain and mind. A scientific study published in 2023 shows young adults understand basics of neurobiological function related to the effect of psychoactive substances and addiction with the game. Data suggest it has the same effect in minors. You can see the abstract (and download the scientific article if you want to) at the External Links section (Stats URL), or before starting the game.

Design & gameplay:
The game has a chibi cartoon-style 3D graphic design of characters & settings which give players a sense of action and fun at first glance. Friends & foes, level challenges, sounds, structures & objects are designed for players —that could play with a partner in the future— to explore, have fun, get surprised, fight, and make decisions that test the mission's knowledge players acquire while watching how their brain works, and how drugs mess up with people’s lives. All relevant situations are inspired in real events of the working brain.

Game mechanics:
• Incorrect responses to 'path questions' can lead to situations that diminish energy levels.
• Correct responses to 'path questions' earn points. Enough points will allow the discovery of a special feature in the camp’s hospital.
• Your choices sometimes affect other AI teammates’ energy levels.
• To complete the first half of a level you need to take care of your fellow(s).
• Once a level is completed, the subsequent level is unlocked.
• Before a new level starts, weapon improvements or new skills can be learned at the camp’s gym.
