What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We'd like to offer a free version of the game while it's in alpha so that players can try it out and give us feedback, and also use our animation tools for their own projects!

In May 2021 we announced a new animation technique allowing rotation of 2D pixel art in 3D, with no need for a 3D model. We've found this to be incredibly helpful for producing complex animations quickly, and we'd like to see what other artists and game developers can do with it!

In addition to the animation tools, battle game is already a blast to play- and we hope to build up a community of players interested in playing competitively or sharing creations.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

Around 6 months. We're still deciding the final scope of the game, but you can expect enormous changes in the final launch!”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Planned features for the full version:
  • Stage editor with built-in voxel editing tools
  • Online multiplayer with rollback netcode for a lag-free experience
  • Polished animation tools, and some new functionality we haven't revealed yet...
  • Online content exchange, so that you can share your creations with the world!
  • Expanded single-player options, with new game modes (and possibly custom game modes, too)

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“This version is an alpha. Although it's fun to play and the character editor may prove very useful to artists, we haven't eliminated all crashes yet. The full scope of planned features isn't set in stone yet, and some non-gameplay elements like UI aren't polished yet.

The mechanics in Battle mode are highly polished, although grabs have not been added yet (important for competitive gameplay). We'll be pushing out changes to add this functionality to the alpha version in the coming weeks.

The animation tools in the character editor are fully functional, and all of our standard characters were created in the same version of the software that you see. However, the editor lacks some major quality of life features (like ctrl + Z). Our UI will be improved in the coming weeks- but even in current state, professional artists and hobbyists can expect to save quite a bit of time over traditional frame-by-frame animation.

Bugs and crashes are possible at this stage! We're asking for help from the community to identify issues, and we'll be fixing them as quickly as we can. Be sure to back up your character files if working in the editor.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, we decided to make the early access version available for free so that folks are able to start playing and sharing with the community right away.

Since this is our first game release (we've worked in other industries up until now), we know that it will take time for our following to grow. We hope that the free version give people enough of an incentive to stick with us -- we have awesome things in store for you!

The final game will cost money because, well, we need to eat! :P”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We'd love all the feedback we can get! We will be opening up our Discord server several days before the launch, and will be actively talking to players about their ideas or any issues they're hitting.

We also plan to hold art contents and accept character design submissions. If you'd like to get your character into the game's official roster, that's a possibility!”

About This Game

What is Smack Studio?

Smack Studio is a fighting game with powerful built-in animation tools for endless creation! Transform 2D sprites into 3D animations using our new animation technology, and bring your characters from concept to playable creation in a fraction of the time thanks to automation tools that speed up the process. Take your creations to the stage and battle with up to 8 players, or export your animations for use in your own projects!

Battle mode - current features
  • 8 player offline VS
  • Take on friends or the CPU players with competitive, fast-paced gameplay, ultra-smooth game feel, and high combo potential
  • Unleash devastating ultra attacks of your own creation (ultras for our default roster will be designed with balance in mind for competitive play)
  • Play using any DirectInput or XInput controller (even GameCube controllers, via the MayFlash USB adapter or similar product)

Character editor - current features
  • Create pixel art animations with 3D depth and rotation, using a new approach that maps 2D images to bones in a 3D skeleton
  • Take a character from concept to fully playable character in less than 30 mins, by using one of our templates (or characters created by the community! Yay, teamwork is awesome!)
  • Animate frame-by-frame to add polish and customizations
  • Create custom projectiles and special effects
  • Add functionality using actions added directly to your animations- a form of simple but effective coding!
  • Export your animations for use in any project you like- we hold no legal claim over any IP created in Smack Studio, and we'd love for artists to create, share, monetize, and do what they please with it! :)

  • 2-4 player online VS with rollback netcode (crucial for a lag-free online experience)
  • Stage editor with voxel editing tools, custom textures, and beautiful lighting effects to transform your scene
