What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“This is by far the biggest Swords and Sandals game I've ever made, and I want to get it right! The additions of multiplayer to the game and the entirely new skill systems mean there's going to be a lot of balancing, bugfixing and feature adding going in once the core game is there. In the past, I've launched S&S games that weren't quite ready and I want to avoid that mistake by allowing the game time to grow and improve before unleashing it fully upon the world. Early Access allows me that luxury, to listen to the players and improve on the game iteratively.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The game went into Early Access on May 27 and I'm expecting a full release roughly 6 months or so later once I'm happy (and the community is happy) that the game is polished and ready to go full launch.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Here's a breakdown of what is in the Early Access build vs the full builds of the game.
Early Access build
  • Full combat gameplay loop
  • Roughly 60% of arenas and champions of the single player campaign are ready (2 months or so)
  • Dungeons are not available yet ( 3-4 months time )
  • Roughly 75% of armour and weapon sets are complete
  • Multiplayer is not yet available ( Roughly 50% complete)
  • Story is about 30% complete ( mainly just text to write, 1 month or so )
  • Observatories and minigames yet to come

Full Access (final game)
  • All 36 + arenas and champions of the single player campaign.
  • All armour and weapon sets
  • Playable ultra powerful Automaton species
  • Crafting of magical weapons and armour
  • Roguelike dungeons to explore
  • More overworld locations, resource gathering, special adventures
  • Overworld minigames to play and observatories to visit
  • More skills, talents and abilities for characters to use
  • Extra species and classes to choose from
  • More system options, useability and game stability
  • Completed multiplayer build with matchmaking and leaderboards[/list

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current Early Access build has the following features:

  • A fully working turn based combat. Skills and items can be used in battle.
  • Shop system is mostly working except for enchanting and forging of items
  • All character species except the Automaton are now playable
  • Level Up system is working, skills and talents can be earned and bought.
  • Overworld map is in place and can be mostly explored
  • Fully complete character creation system including abilities and appearance
  • Multiplayer is not yet in the game but proposed for a private alpha test by the end of the year.
  • All sound effects and music are in the game
  • Most weapons are in the game and roughly 70% of the armour sets are in.
  • See the section above for more estimates and info!

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“At this stage, the plan for the game is to remain the same both in Early Access and full release out of fairness to all players.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“There's a hugely active Swords and Sandals Community spread throughout here, Discord, YouTube and other social media platforms. I'll be talking with players each week to get feedback on what's working, what needs balancing and what would be 'cool to see' in future builds. Through feedback on the Steam Community forums, I'll be updating the builds as often as I can. Now that the game is in Early Access, most likely several times a week at least.

This is definitely the biggest scope I've had for an S&S game and basically represents the best parts of S&S 2, S&S 3 and even S&S 4 and I can't wait to bring it to the world in 2022.”

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

This game contains frequent (but very cartoony) depictions of violent combat between fantasy gladiators. Loss of limbs, blood splats and decapitations can and do occur during battles, but can be turned off in the game settings for a younger audience.
