About This Game

I take off and find myself in the void. Orbs light up around me. A being appears in the distance. Figural outlines become clear, the surroundings change continuously. It comes towards me, tall, graceful. It moves between space and time, directs events and comes from a higher world. She takes me carefully in her hands and places me gently on the floor. Then she leaves, paving the way for a new life...

A Geometric Poem

The VR Experience is a poetic narrative that is told a little differently with each run. It leads through a life cycle. Geometries form their own worlds, surrounded by an interactive soundtrack of ambient music.

After starting the game, an undefined universe appears and a figure approaches, whose movements seem to be influenced by geometric shapes and sounds. This creates associations with classical figures such as the Egyptian Isis, the goddess of birth, rebirth and magic, as well as the mistress of the underworld.

Like the quadrivium of antiquity, the concept is based on stylistic devices from geometry, music, arithmetic and astronomy. The "Odyssey" motif is a metaphor for the description of a journey into the unknown that seems to begin and end in the same place. In between lies a path, a process of experience, similar to the principle of a labyrinth.

Expanded concept

"Our creation is the modification of relationship."
Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941, philosopher, poet and composer, Nobel Prize winner for literature)

Modyssey poses questions about the interplay of metaphysics and virtuality, geometry and art as well as immersion through sound in a continuous and performative process. By association, the story of a cycle emerges, whose beginning and end fade into one another.

In the context of the 2020-2022 pandemic, Rabindranath Tagore's quote appears to be a fitting description of the disruption to human relationships at the time: The individual and the counterpart increasingly interact through avatars, virtual correspondence becomes the norm and creates changed starting positions in dealing with a new dimension of virtuality.

At the heart of Modyssey is the interaction with the "other" as an abstract dialog: the intentional and unintentional entering into connections, the experience of action and reaction. A dialog that is conducted in parallel on different levels: passively, actively, mentally and physically. Forms are associated and interpreted without verbal cues. The environment is virtual, the counterpart artificial, yet an abstract dialog seems possible.

The origin

For the VR experience, performer Mia Gara and developer Stephan Kloß designed a choreography for the virtual character. Based on the Mazetools Core, Mia's motion capture controls the interactive soundtrack composed by Jakob Gruhl through her movements. The figure was designed by Jan Lorenz.

The project was funded by the Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (MDM) and the Kunststiftung Sachsen-Anhalt.
